Chapter 381

โ€œThe closet is the escape plan?โ€ Ternen looked about as confused as Rick did. I laughed. โ€œJust follow me.โ€ I walked into the closet, and they all followed. โ€œClose the door behind us, Ternen, please.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ I heard the door shut before I opened the next door, and then the one on the other side.

โ€œYou have a door that leads to a door?โ€ Abby giggled. โ€œI do. Do you want to know why?โ€ I asked, still using the other door to block their view. โ€œWhy?โ€ Abby came up behind me, and I opened both doors wide. โ€œBecause this is a magic closet. Follow me.โ€ I waved them forward, and we walked through my bedroom, down the hall, and down the stairs.

โ€œYou have another house in your closet?โ€ Shellyโ€™s words were filled with awe. She turned to Rick and elbowed him. โ€œWe can barely afford the one, and she has a huge house in a closet.โ€ I laughed and winked down at Abby. โ€œCome on, I have someone I want you to meet.โ€ I held out my hands, and she lifted her arms. โ€œSorry,โ€ she whispered as we started down the steps. โ€œWhy are you saying sorry?โ€ I turned to her as we reached the ground floor. โ€œBecause stairs are hard for me and make me tired.โ€ She looked down at her hands. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to think you have to carryโ€ฆโ€ I poked her cheek. โ€œI will never be mad, annoyed, or upset if I carry you.โ€ โ€œAmy!โ€ I heard the squeal before I turned in time to catch Carly. โ€œHey, baby girl. How was your day today?โ€ I brushed back her curls and kissed her head. โ€œIt was great. Aunt Wendy and Aunt Toya took me on a run, and we had lunch with Daddy.โ€ I smiled. โ€œThat sounds like an amazing day, but I have a surprise for you.โ€ I heard Wendy and Toya pull up short behind me. โ€œYou said that. What is it?โ€ Carly finally looked behind me, and her eyes widened. โ€œThisโ€ฆโ€ I stepped aside and pulled Abby to my side. โ€œThis is Abby.โ€ Carlyโ€™s eyes grew wide, and she wiggled in my arms to get down. โ€œHi.โ€ Abby smiled shyly. โ€œHi.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m Carly.โ€ Carly smiled. โ€œDid you want to be my friend?โ€ Abby smiled. โ€œI would like that.โ€ โ€œDo you want to go to my bedroom? I can show you all my toys.โ€ Carly held out her hand, but I placed a hand on her shoulder. โ€œAbby finds it a little hard right now to go up and down stairs.โ€ Carly looked up at me and then moved to Wendy and Toya. โ€œCan Aunty Wendy and Toya help?โ€ She looked at the others. โ€œIt will give you time to explain everything and show them around.โ€ I looked at Shelly and Rick. โ€œWendy and Toya are my best friends and would never harm Abby.โ€ I rubbed Carlyโ€™s hair. โ€œI trust them with my girl here every day.โ€

They looked at each other and then down at the two hopeful girls. There was a soft sigh, and then Shelly looked at me. โ€œPromise she is safe?โ€ โ€œAbsolutely.โ€ I nodded. I turned to Wendy and Toya. โ€œDo you mind?โ€ โ€œOf course not.โ€ Wendy smiled, and she walked over to Abby. โ€œIโ€™m Wendy.โ€ She grinned. โ€œIs it okay if I pick you up to go back upstairs?โ€ Abby looked up at her parents, and they both nodded. She turned back to Wendy. โ€œYes, please.โ€ She held up her arms, and Wendy scooped her into her arms. โ€œLetโ€™s go, Carly.โ€ Toya opened her arms, and Carly jumped up. Then the four of them left us alone.

I waved everyone else out the front door. โ€œThis is our escape.โ€ I walked out onto the grass and turned to look over the cabin. โ€œThis was my great-grandmotherโ€™s land. She lived here, loved it here, and diedโ€ฆ well, close enough.โ€ They laughed. โ€œThis is in your closet?โ€ Ternen looked around wide-eyed. โ€œSort of. My closet holds a portal here, always connected.โ€ I brought them around the side. โ€œI know it isnโ€™t much, but itโ€™s safe. Itโ€™s far enough that Vince wonโ€™t be able to find us, and best of all, there are enough bathrooms for all of us to use.โ€ I turned to them. โ€œThere arenโ€™t, however, enough rooms.โ€ Rick looked at Shelly. โ€œIt wonโ€™t be forever.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œNo, it wonโ€™t be.โ€ I looked at them. โ€œMy fatherโ€™s pack will resurface, and weโ€™ll all join them. You will get a house, a job, and for the love of the goddess, a fair wage.โ€ I looked at Alannah and Ternen. โ€œThere are no rules about omega pregnancy. There wonโ€™t be repercussions for asking for a new position.โ€ I turned back to the land. โ€œAnd you can watch your children grow up safe and sound after the war is over.โ€ Shelly gasped. โ€œWar?โ€
