Chapter Thirty-Nine

โ€œYou can do both.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œI know my dad doesnโ€™t have many female warriors, but that is going to change. You wonโ€™t be the only one that wants to be a warrior now. But warriors can still live a full life, including kids.โ€

โ€œI know. But I donโ€™t want to choose.โ€ Cass looked down at her plate.

โ€œA mate, a good mate, wonโ€™t make you choose.โ€ I patted her hand and finished my steak. โ€œThe Goddess doesnโ€™t make mistakes. Mates are supposed to be your other half. I think your mate will understand your want to be a warrior and will support you.โ€

โ€œYou think so?โ€ She looked at me with hopeful eyes.

โ€œI do.โ€ I got up and grabbed more steak. I was starving.

Itโ€™s your body getting ready to shift. You will eat like this from now on. Alphas burn a lot of calories because they need to shift more. Nixโ€™s voice filtered through, and I nodded.

โ€œYouโ€™re eating a lot.โ€ Cass looked at me as I settled.

โ€œNix said Iโ€™m getting ready to shift. Alphas burn a lot of calories because we have bigger wolves and need to shift more often.โ€ I ate through my second plate and then turned to Cass, who finished her first. โ€œYou ready?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ We stood and turned to leave, but Cass bumped into Greyson, the second gamma.

โ€œGreyson, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ Cassโ€™ face flushed red, and he chuckled.

โ€œNo harm, little wolf. Itโ€™s always a pleasure to see you.โ€ I watched as he trailed his hands down her arms and stepped back. Cass shivered from his touch but just gave a quick jerk of her head before she nearly sprinted out of the dining hall.

โ€œWhat was that?โ€ I asked as I caught up with her. โ€œLittle wolf?โ€

โ€œNothing!โ€ she nearly yelled. โ€œItโ€™s nothing. He just calls me that sometimes to make fun of me.โ€

โ€œRightโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆbut why did you run away, then?โ€ I questioned her further, and she just shook her head, and I knew exactly what this meant. โ€œOh my god, Cass, you like him.โ€

โ€œShut your mouth right this second.โ€

โ€œWhy? Itโ€™s okay, you like him. Whatโ€™s wrong with that?โ€ I grabbed her arm and tugged her along.

โ€œHeโ€™s the second gamma,โ€ she tossed out.

โ€œOkay, and?โ€ I looked down at her face, and I saw how sad she was.

โ€œYou donโ€™t understand. Nothing can ever happen between us.โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€ I pulled her to a stop and forced her to face me.

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m not ranked.โ€

I waved my free hand around her face. โ€œIโ€™m going to need more of an explanation here, Cass.โ€

โ€œRanked wolves never mate with unranked wolves.โ€ She stomped her foot, and I sighed.

โ€œThatโ€™s not entirely true, Cass. It happens all the time, but the ranked wolves reject the unranked wolf, and itโ€™s usually the ranked women that reject their unranked men.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. Plus, you donโ€™t know if heโ€™s your mate or if he would reject you. You are putting the cart before the horse here. Why not just see where the friendship goes instead of ignoring him? Goddess forbid he is your mate, and instead of showing him how amazing you are, you just continuously run away from him.โ€ I poked her forehead.

โ€œAmy, itโ€™s just not in the cards for me.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know that. I want you to try. Even if itโ€™s just a friendship. Greyson is a good wolf to know. He is the head of my dadโ€™s warriors, and if you want to be one, he will help.โ€

Cass ran her fingers through her hair and gripped it. โ€œOkay, I will.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ I pulled her to walk again and flipped around to watch her face as I walked backwards. โ€œYou know, he is super cute.โ€

โ€œShut up.โ€ Cass hit my shoulder, and I laughed.

โ€œWhat? Iโ€™m just saying. He is quite adorable.โ€

โ€œYeah, he is.โ€

I grinned as I spotted someone heading our way. โ€œGreyson would make a good mate to any she-wolf.โ€

โ€œHe really would. Goddess, Amy, am I stupid to have this crush on him? I mean, be brutally honest. Do you think the goddess would make me his mate? Or if she did, would he keep me? Iโ€™m no one.โ€

โ€œCassโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo, before you answer, I want you to think about it. He is a ranked wolf, and Iโ€™m not. And I know you said that itโ€™s usually a ranked she-wolf that rejects unranked mates, but there is still a chance for him to reject me, right?โ€

My eyes flicked over her shoulder. โ€œThere is a chance, but I think the first thing you need to do is talk to the man. Who is to say he would reject you if you turned out to be his mate?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m terrified. He deserves better than me.โ€

โ€œWho says?โ€ A deep voice sounded behind us, and Cass froze.
