Chapter 427
โSave him?โ Thothโs voice was filled with confusion. โWhy would you have to save him?โ
I felt my face freeze for a second. โBecause he is being controlled with magic, surrounded by people who want to see him dead, and we donโt know who else is in on the plot.โ
Thoth grunted, and my dad looked a little flustered. โGavin?โ
I looked at my dad with a furrowed brow. โDad?โ
He coughed. โYeah?โ
Thoth sounded confused. โWhy is Amy thinking she has to save the king? Why doesnโt she know everything?โ
My dad scratched behind his ear. โOkay, so donโt get mad.โ Oh hell. What did he do? โBut I thought it better to leave her out of it.โ
โWhat did you just say?โ Thoth growled. โAre you telling me she has no clue what the king has been doing? The letters? The explanation? She received none of it.โ He growled again. โThese last years, she has been in the dark?โ
My father sucked in a breath. โYes.โ Thoth smashed something, and my father winced. โIn my defense, there was a reason for it.โ
โWhatโs that?โ Thoth growled out, sending shivers down my spine. โWhat could possibly have come from keeping your daughter in the dark? How does that help us?โ
โWell, she has focused on herself, her magic, and her wolves. She has grown her own pack and grown into a pretty fantastic wolf, if I do say so myself.โ He smiled at me.
โShe would have done that anyway,โ Thoth growled out. โShe is the most selfless and amazing wolf I have ever met, Gav. You have ruined everything.โ Thoth sounded hurt, but his words made my stomach flutter. He really thinks that about me? The words made my face burn, and I had to turn away from the screen.
My dad sighed. โI know you wanted her looped in, but I wanted her focused. And Rowan was a distraction. Even you were iffy, but she needed someone to help her.โ I watched as my dadโs eyes hardened. โYou might not like my choice, but it was my choice.โ
Thoth grumbled. โI seriously hate you some days.โ
My dad just smiled. โI know. But I had your guard save everything.โ He turned to me. โTomorrow, drive back to the school. Go to the guard at the apartment building and say the word โTankaโ. He will hand over everything.โ
โEverything?โ I leaned over. โWhat have you been keeping from me?โ I felt my stomach quiver a bit.
Thoth snorted. โEverything.โ
I looked between the dark screen and my fatherโs face, who looked a little guilty. โWhy do I feel like there is a lot more to the story?โ
โBecause there is.โ Thoth sighed. โBut it doesnโt matter. Whatโs done is done. Everything is already completely screwed now, anyway. You knowing now isnโt going to change a thing.โ Thoth was pissed. We could both hear it in his voice. What the hell did my dad keep from me?
My father winced. โI did what I thought was best for you.โ
I sighed. โIโm an adult, Daddy. I can make that decision myself.โ I shook my head. โBut we got off topic.โ I rubbed at my face. โIโll go grab everything tomorrow, and then we will have another call to go over everything. But right this second, letโs jump back to the rogues. They are obviously being controlled by the twins, and by extension, Verity, which brings me to the next topic. Verity was here.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ Thoth sounded confused. โHow is that even possible?โ
โWhat do you mean? What do I mean?โ I shot back. โShe was here. I saw her before she took off. And then when Vince called her to knock me out, she told him she was already with โThe Brotherhood of Bloodshed,โ whoever they are. But they seem to be the ones in charge.โ
My dad looked off to the side. โAre you sure they called themselves that?โ
I nodded. โCompletely sure.โ I rolled my neck back. โI heard it a few times, and Brandon kept groaning about the brotherhood.โ I leaned against my headboard.
โWait, letโs jump back for a second. When and where did you see Verity?โ Thoth interrupted.
โIn the forest around Vinceโs pack. I ran here from the airport, so Iโm honestly not one hundred percent where I was in the woods. But apparently, she has this place locked down with draining traps.โ I rubbed my eyes. I was tired. โThe day I sent Mom to the cabinโฆ so like six days, I think, maybe seven days ago.โ
Thoth hummed. โAre you sure?โ
โAbout how many days ago, no. But between five and seven, for sure. About seeing Verity, yes. I am one hundred percent sure. She was flirting with Rick, which was pretty gross, if you ask me.โ
My dad snorted. โWhy are you asking about Verity?โ
โBecause I have someone following her, and she reported to her with the king.โ
โThen she was lying,โ I cut in.
