Chapter Fortyโ€“Five

โ€œWhat?โ€ My brain froze for a moment. What the fuck did he mean he was the king?

His chuckle was deep, and my body responded, clenching in my lower body. โ€œI am the king, pup. Go save your father. Once itโ€™s done, tell him I will head there soon.โ€ His voice took a dark turn, and I felt an edge to it.

โ€œOkayโ€ฆ I will.โ€

โ€œOh, and Amy?โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œTell Ronnie he should have called the regular number instead of my cell phone. There are channels that you usually have to go through for this normally, but Iโ€™ll let it slide this one time because itโ€™s an emergency.โ€

โ€œWill do, your majesty.โ€

His laugh was loud and instant. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to call me that, little wolf. But have Ronnie give you my cell number. I like all my alphas having my number in case things like this happen.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not one of the alphasโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou might not run a pack, but you are an alpha.โ€ His voice still held a bit of amusement.

โ€œOkay.โ€ I felt uncertain. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I donโ€™t know what to call you.โ€

โ€œRowan. You can call me Rowan.โ€

โ€œKing Rowan, thank you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t make anyone call me king. Just Rowan.โ€

โ€œOkay, Rowan, thank you.โ€

โ€œGo save your dad. I have a bone to pick with him when I get there.โ€

โ€œRowan.โ€ I started and then froze.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œI know you donโ€™t like my father.โ€

โ€œWho said that?โ€ His voice cut me off again, deeper this time.

โ€œHe did,โ€ I said slowly.

โ€œWell, I could never say your father was stupid.โ€ There was a sigh from his side. โ€œJust because I may or may not have personal feelings towards a wolf under my command doesnโ€™t mean I would let it influence how I govern them. Your father doesnโ€™t deserve to be manipulated, and his pack doesnโ€™t deserve to be taken over by a she-wolf who is unworthy.โ€

โ€œThank you, Rowan.โ€

โ€œNow, do what you have to do. I will speak on your behalf with the council, and I will personally come check in on your pack when I can.โ€

โ€œI will inform everyone before I leave.โ€

โ€œLeave?โ€

โ€œYes. I live with my mother in Oakenfangโ€™s pack grounds. I was only visiting my fatherโ€™s pack for the summer.โ€

โ€œAh yes, I remember now. Well, I guess then, if the Goddess allows, I will meet you when I can. Goodbye, Amy.โ€

โ€œBye, Rowan.โ€ I replaced the receiver on the phone and glared up at Ronnie. โ€œYou called the kingโ€™s personal line!โ€ I screeched as I stood.

Ronnie had the sense to look away. โ€œI figured it was important enough to call straight to him.โ€

โ€œThen whyโ€ฆโ€ I stopped mid-sentence. โ€œYou know what? I donโ€™t care. I need to interrogate Aurora.โ€

โ€œWhat do you plan on doing?โ€

โ€œWhatever it takes.โ€ I stood.

โ€œThen come with me.โ€ Ronnie looked a little pale, but he headed out of the office and down a few flights of stairs until we ended in the basement. He brought me to a door and then stopped with his hand on the handle. โ€œAre you sure about this? I could get Beck to do this instead.โ€

โ€œI have to do this.โ€ He wilted in front of me and then opened the door. I hissed at what I saw there. The room was filled with silver knives and different devices that I had never seen before. โ€œGrab what you need.โ€

I slid into the room and selected a few things. Then I carried them out and waited for Ronnie to close the door behind us. โ€œYou have become more terrifying just with the tools you selected.โ€

โ€œI want to scare her, but I also need to have things I might need to make her talk. I was serious when I said I would do whatever I need to make her talk.โ€

โ€œAmy, I really wish you would let Beck or me do this for you.โ€ He grabbed my arm, and I dropped a pair of pliers.

I bent down and grabbed them and stood. โ€œI know, but I wonโ€™t make you do something I myself wonโ€™t do. And this isnโ€™t for you to do when there is an alpha to do it.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t your pack.โ€

โ€œBut it is still my fatherโ€™s, and it falls to me to handle.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo more buts. Bring me to the interrogation room so I can set everything up before you and Beck grab her.โ€ I raised my eyebrow. โ€œBefore you try to say you donโ€™t have one, every pack has one.โ€

Ronnie snapped his mouth shut and motioned for me to follow. He opened a door, punched in a code, and stairs opened up, and we headed farther down.
