Listen to this chapter:

The goddess shook her head. โ€œYou saved yourself,โ€ she said, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead. Then, turning to the others, she declared, โ€œYou are all devoted to my path, or the path of my sisters and brothers.โ€ She looked at Toyaโ€™s father. โ€œYour daughter has done well and will be rewarded if she survives the final battle.โ€

He swallowed, instantly alert. โ€œIt?โ€

The goddess offered a sad smile. โ€œI cannot see the future. I just lay the path.โ€

Thoth shifted, and she turned to face him. โ€œHiding behind a mask cannot change anything.โ€ His head snapped up.

โ€œMe?โ€ His voice was confused.

She chuckled. โ€œWho else is wearing a mask but you?โ€

Thoth scratched his head. โ€œNo one.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ she said, walking to him and leaning down. โ€œYou hide yourself to protect yourself, but you are only keeping yourself away from what could be. You are hiding away, and I am worried you will miss your chance. If you donโ€™t confess the truthโ€”all of itโ€”then you will miss the thing you want most in this world.โ€

Thoth swallowed. โ€œBut what if I mess up again?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œThen you mess up. But holding back wonโ€™t do you any good.โ€

She turned. โ€œStay on the path, or donโ€™t. It is up to you all.โ€ Then I was back. I staggered, and Thoth steadied me.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€ His question was soft.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I replied, patting his hand. A spark jumped between our skin. I furrowed my brow as I pulled away, turning back to the others. โ€œSo, Iโ€™m sure you have questions.โ€ I tried to smile, but it felt forced.

The others stared at me. โ€œThat was the goddess,โ€ Alpha Chris said, pale.

I nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œCould that have been magic?โ€ Alpha Tim asked, looking at the others, who all shrugged.

I blew out a breath. โ€œMagic can do a lot,โ€ I said, smiling. โ€œI can change my appearance, I can change how I sound, but there is one thing forbidden.โ€

My father nodded. โ€œItโ€™s forbidden to imitate a celestial.โ€

I nodded. โ€œIf anyone pretends to be a goddess in any way, they will lose their blessingsโ€”magic, shifting, or whatever else was gifted. Rank, power, auraโ€”all stripped instantly.โ€

Toyaโ€™s father shook his head. โ€œThere is no way that was faked.โ€ He looked at the others. โ€œI have felt the moon goddess before. I know you have too.โ€ The others nodded. โ€œI need you to look at me and tell me that what you felt was not the goddess.โ€

Tim looked away. โ€œShe felt like the goddess, but I just wanted to offer any other explanation.โ€

I nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s fair. But I want to ask a question.โ€ I tilted my head at him.

He met my stare and nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œSince you have come into this office, you and a few others seem to be almost against my father,โ€ I said, everyone snapping their attention to me. โ€œHe saved your pack from death, made sure you had places to live. He took care of you and welcomed you into his confidence, while still giving you the dignity and reverence deserving of an alpha. When there was yet another attack meant to kill everyone here, he took you to our sacred meeting placeโ€”somewhere no one outside of our pack has ever been. Yet you still question him. Why?โ€

The question hung in the air. Alpha Tim looked at the others, his gaze flitting from one to the next. โ€œItโ€™s not like that?โ€ he finally spoke up.

Thoth stood, silently coming to stand behind me in support. โ€œIt is like that,โ€ he stated, looking around the room. โ€œI have met with you multiple times, and every time I see some pushback. When Gavin leaves, there are always some murmurs. I bit my tongue because Gavin asked me to, but Amy is right. After everything he has done for you, for your packs, you still act like this. Why?โ€

Toyaโ€™s father stood and spun on the others. โ€œI have kept quiet for peace, but the Macleans have been nothing short of saviors for my pack. My wolves look up to their example.โ€ He turned to my father and bowed. โ€œI should have said something earlier.โ€

โ€œYou have, Broderick,โ€ my father replied, his voice a little tired.

โ€œI have spoken to you about it all, yes, but I should have said my peace to the others long before this,โ€ Toyaโ€™s father continued, spinning to face the men. โ€œYou mumble about Gavin taking our power, our pack, but he has never tried. You mumble about being weak alphas, and you are correct. We are weak alphas, but that is not Gavinโ€™s fault.โ€

I stepped over to Toyaโ€™s father. โ€œNot weak.โ€ He turned to me with soft eyes. I shook my head. โ€œNever weak alphas. You are just new. Your packs are small, but we will help you become stronger.โ€
