Chapter 509
He stared at me, mouth slightly open. โI messaged you, Any. I emailed you, I called. But I was blocked.โ He produced his phone, placing it on the table. He tapped the contacts, selecting my name. I retrieved my phone and waited.
โThe customer you have called is unavailable.โ My eyebrows shot up.
โThatโs not right,โ I said, putting down my phone. โWe spoke when I was in the hospital.โ
He nodded. โYou called my office line, not my cell. Itโs a desk phone I check daily. I could still call you from that numberโฆโ He looked at me with a pained expression. โBut itโs not secure, and what I wanted to discuss was personal.โ He looked away. โBut,โ he waved at his phone, โyou blocked me.โ
โBut I didnโt!โ I displayed my empty block list. โSee?โ I scrolled to his number and initiated a call.
โThe customer you have called is unavailable.โ The same message played, and I raised an eyebrow.
โYou blocked me,โ he said, shaking his head and mirroring my actions. He checked his block list; it was also empty. โHow the fuck?โ A soft click announced the opening of my door. My father entered, sheepish, phone in hand. My stomach dropped. โDaddy?โ My voice was barely a whisper.
โYou tell the truth, Gav, or I swear,โ my motherโs angry voice boomed from his phone.
โMom?โ I looked at my dad. โWhy are you here?โ My father avoided my gaze. โWhat did you do this time?โ
My mother scoffed. โYour father likes to play puppet master. What do you think he did?โ
โHey now,โ he said, furrowing his brows.
โGavin!โ my mother yelled.
โDaddy?โ I tilted my head. Rowan rose from his chair, still clutching his wine bottle.
My dad began to pace. โLook. Donโt get mad.โ My stomach churned, the food threatening to reappear.
โGavin,โ Rowan called out. โWhat is going on?โ
He swallowed, then squared his shoulders. โAmy didnโt block you,โ he said, turning to me. โAnd Rowan didnโt block you.โ
I sighed. โI calledโโ
โI know,โ my dad said, raising his hands. โI did it.โ My jaw dropped.
Chapter 510
โWhat did you just say?โ I staggered back to my chair and slumped down.
He looked at me pleadingly. โPlease understand. When Rowan called me about your heatโฆI panicked.โ
โDaddy,โ I whispered, watching him wince as he registered the hurt in my voice. โWhy?โ
โI needed you to be focused,โ he said, avoiding my eyes.
I laughed. โYou needed me to focus?โ I shook my head. โWow.โ
Rowan clenched his fists. โI came to you for advice,โ he said through clenched teeth. โI needed a friend, and you justโฆkept me away from your daughter?โ
My dad stared at him. โI trusted you with her wellbeing, and she was bullied, almost killed by Brandon, of all people, and then you left her to burn through her heat alone.โ My dad growled. โWhy would I ever trust you with her?โ He turned to me. โBut Amy is an amazing young woman, smart enough to choose her own man.โ He turned back to Rowan. โEven if itโs you.โ
โThen why?โ Rowan growled.
โI already told you why. I needed Amy to focus on Vince and Brandon. And I needed you focused on Verity and the council.โ
โWhy was that your choice?โ I asked, still reeling.
โIโm your father,โ he replied, surprised by my question.
โIโm the king,โ Rowan growled. โItโs not up to you who I talk to or what I focus on.โ
โI knew what needed to be done.โ
My mother, whose presence on the phone Iโd forgotten, blew a raspberry. โMy Gavin is a meddler. He thinks he knows best and manipulates people. Like when he lied to me about cheating.โ
โItโs not like that,โ he interjected.
But I laughed. โItโs exactly like that.โ I grabbed my wine and drank half the bottle.
โBaby girl. I love you.โ He seemed hurt by my agreement with my mother.
โJust because you said it doesnโt mean it erases the pain you caused,โ I said, leveling him with a look. โI was angry he left, but I understood. And after my heat, I even respected him for it.โ My eyes flicked to Rowan. โBut the silence afterward shattered me.โ I turned back to my dad. โYou shattered me and made me think it was Rowan.โ
