My father had the pack doctor waiting as we ran into Cass's room. โGive her to me,โ he said, holding out his arms. I handed her to him. He laid her on the bed and cut away her clothes.
โWhat happened?โ My father leaned against the door. I turned, growled, and lunged at him. โYou did this!โ I screamed. I saw in his eyes that he agreed. โShe shouldnโt have been out there alone. And you know it.โ
โThis was her job,โ he began, but I interrupted. โThatโs bullshit!โ I screamed. โThis is Cass, for goddessโ sake! Donโt spout your bullshit when another pack member is fighting for their life.โ
My dad pushed off the wall. โIโโ The door opened, and Greyson walked to the bed. โStop it,โ he said calmly, dropping to his knees.
โSee, even Greyson doesnโt want to hear your bullshit,โ I retorted, but Greyson looked up at me. โI was talking to you,โ he said, his words like a slap.
โWhat?โ
โYou are looking at my mate like sheโs still the weak little friend you knew growing up,โ Greyson said, looking at Cass. โBut she isnโt. You gave her the chance to become stronger, Amy, and she spent the last few years honing it. When you were fighting for your life, no one questioned your duty because youโre an alpha. Cass is a Gamma, and sheโs the best damn tracker weโve ever had. Stop diminishing her.โ
I stumbled back. โI wasnโt,โ I protested, but he looked at me with devastation in his eyes. โYou were. So stop it.โ He looked at the doctor, who had finished cutting Cassโs clothes, leaving her in boy shorts and a sports bra. โHow is she?โ
The doctor hesitated, inserting an IV. โThe pup obviously returned to the goddess, but somethingโs going on, and Iโm trying to figure it out.โ He withdrew a vial of blood and frowned. โInteresting.โ
โWhat is?โ My father asked, pushing off the wall.
The doctor turned, handing him the vial. โI thought sheโd been injected with silver or wolfsbane. She shows no sign of healing, so I was concerned.โ He looked from Cass to the vial. โButโฆโ he trailed off.
โBut what?โ Greyson asked, his voice trembling.
The doctor pointed to the vial. โIf there was silver or wolfsbane, weโd smell it and see a distinct separation in the blood. But thereโs nothing.โ
โThen whatโs going on? She isnโt healing,โ my father said, pointing to Cass.
The doctor looked uncomfortable. โI donโt know whatโs going on.โ
โItโs Cass,โ I whispered. Everyone turned to look at me.
โWhat did you just say?โ The doctor asked, confused.
โCass is the reason she isnโt healing.โ
โThat doesnโt make sense,โ he pointed out.
But Greyson nodded. โSheโs right.โ
I nodded. โCass would have told her wolf to focus on saving the baby. She would have made her promise.โ
Greyson let a tear fall. โFoolish woman,โ he whispered, kissing her temple. โCome back to me.โ
โIs that possible?โ My father stepped closer to the bed.
The doctor considered it. โWhile normally Iโd say no, this might be an exception. Normally, if a wolf miscarries, she moves on quickly. She might nest, or be restless, but sheโd move on and try for another, probably starting a new heat within the month. If itโs an attack, the wolf would save the human and console her until she was ready. But obviously, this isnโt happening.โ
โShe would have convinced Lily to save our pup,โ Greyson said, his voice hollow. โShe was so excited when she figured it out; she ran to see Amy to see if she was right.โ
I stepped into Rowanโs arms. โShe came to me yesterday to hang out.โ
He nodded. โYeah. She was a little disappointed, but then your dad called for a tracker. She said sheโd see you after.โ
โWhy did she volunteer if she was pregnant?โ My dad asked.
Greyson smiled, looking down at Cass. โShe said she wanted to finish this so we could raise our pup here, at home, instead of the Agora.โ
