Listen to this chapter:

My father had the pack doctor waiting as we ran into Cass's room. โ€œGive her to me,โ€ he said, holding out his arms. I handed her to him. He laid her on the bed and cut away her clothes.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ My father leaned against the door. I turned, growled, and lunged at him. โ€œYou did this!โ€ I screamed. I saw in his eyes that he agreed. โ€œShe shouldnโ€™t have been out there alone. And you know it.โ€

โ€œThis was her job,โ€ he began, but I interrupted. โ€œThatโ€™s bullshit!โ€ I screamed. โ€œThis is Cass, for goddessโ€™ sake! Donโ€™t spout your bullshit when another pack member is fighting for their life.โ€

My dad pushed off the wall. โ€œIโ€”โ€ The door opened, and Greyson walked to the bed. โ€œStop it,โ€ he said calmly, dropping to his knees.

โ€œSee, even Greyson doesnโ€™t want to hear your bullshit,โ€ I retorted, but Greyson looked up at me. โ€œI was talking to you,โ€ he said, his words like a slap.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou are looking at my mate like sheโ€™s still the weak little friend you knew growing up,โ€ Greyson said, looking at Cass. โ€œBut she isnโ€™t. You gave her the chance to become stronger, Amy, and she spent the last few years honing it. When you were fighting for your life, no one questioned your duty because youโ€™re an alpha. Cass is a Gamma, and sheโ€™s the best damn tracker weโ€™ve ever had. Stop diminishing her.โ€

I stumbled back. โ€œI wasnโ€™t,โ€ I protested, but he looked at me with devastation in his eyes. โ€œYou were. So stop it.โ€ He looked at the doctor, who had finished cutting Cassโ€™s clothes, leaving her in boy shorts and a sports bra. โ€œHow is she?โ€

The doctor hesitated, inserting an IV. โ€œThe pup obviously returned to the goddess, but somethingโ€™s going on, and Iโ€™m trying to figure it out.โ€ He withdrew a vial of blood and frowned. โ€œInteresting.โ€

โ€œWhat is?โ€ My father asked, pushing off the wall.

The doctor turned, handing him the vial. โ€œI thought sheโ€™d been injected with silver or wolfsbane. She shows no sign of healing, so I was concerned.โ€ He looked from Cass to the vial. โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ he trailed off.

โ€œBut what?โ€ Greyson asked, his voice trembling.

The doctor pointed to the vial. โ€œIf there was silver or wolfsbane, weโ€™d smell it and see a distinct separation in the blood. But thereโ€™s nothing.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€™s going on? She isnโ€™t healing,โ€ my father said, pointing to Cass.

The doctor looked uncomfortable. โ€œI donโ€™t know whatโ€™s going on.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Cass,โ€ I whispered. Everyone turned to look at me.

โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€ The doctor asked, confused.

โ€œCass is the reason she isnโ€™t healing.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t make sense,โ€ he pointed out.

But Greyson nodded. โ€œSheโ€™s right.โ€

I nodded. โ€œCass would have told her wolf to focus on saving the baby. She would have made her promise.โ€

Greyson let a tear fall. โ€œFoolish woman,โ€ he whispered, kissing her temple. โ€œCome back to me.โ€

โ€œIs that possible?โ€ My father stepped closer to the bed.

The doctor considered it. โ€œWhile normally Iโ€™d say no, this might be an exception. Normally, if a wolf miscarries, she moves on quickly. She might nest, or be restless, but sheโ€™d move on and try for another, probably starting a new heat within the month. If itโ€™s an attack, the wolf would save the human and console her until she was ready. But obviously, this isnโ€™t happening.โ€

โ€œShe would have convinced Lily to save our pup,โ€ Greyson said, his voice hollow. โ€œShe was so excited when she figured it out; she ran to see Amy to see if she was right.โ€

I stepped into Rowanโ€™s arms. โ€œShe came to me yesterday to hang out.โ€

He nodded. โ€œYeah. She was a little disappointed, but then your dad called for a tracker. She said sheโ€™d see you after.โ€

โ€œWhy did she volunteer if she was pregnant?โ€ My dad asked.

Greyson smiled, looking down at Cass. โ€œShe said she wanted to finish this so we could raise our pup here, at home, instead of the Agora.โ€
