Chapter 526
Cass nodded and rolled away. โThatโs what I thought.โ
Greyson looked at me; the pain was evident. He slid down and pulled her close. He whimpered, snuggling her, but she remained distant. โYou have to get cleaned up, baby,โ he whispered, but she shook her head.
โAs soon as I shower, he will be gone, his scent will be gone, and I canโt face that yet.โ I furrowed my brow. Greyson noticed, shook his head, and mouthed, โLater.โ I nodded, attempting to comfort her. I patted her back, but she remained rigid.
โPlease, leave,โ she said, her voice strained. Turning, she met Greysonโs gaze. โCan you please leave me alone? I just need space.โ Tears welled in her eyes; she seemed panicked.
I sensed his fear before anyone else. โWe will leave if you allow me to do one thing?โ I leaned closer to meet her gaze.
โWhat?โ
โLet me command youโฆโ My voice softened; she shuddered as I trailed off.
โWhy?โ Her eyes narrowed; I heard her teeth grind.
โYour mate is worried, and so am I.โ I breathed. โWhen my pup died, I was happy because I knew I was going to follow him into the abyss. I wanted to.โ A tear traced a path down her cheek as she closed her eyes.
โDonโt ask me to do that, baby,โ Greyson murmured. โDonโt ask me to bury our pup and you. I wouldnโt be able to bear it.โ He leaned down, his face close to hers. โIโll leave. If you let an alpha command you not to hurt yourself.โ
She shuddered. โJust that?โ He nodded. โFine. But not Amy. Alpha Gavin can do it.โ
I felt a pang of hurt, but I nodded and rose as my dad approached. โCassie, I command you to not harm yourself while you are alone.โ The command took effect, and he stepped back.
โNow leave me alone,โ she said, tears threatening to overwhelm her as she curled into a fetal position. โItโs okay, baby. Momma loved you so much.โ My father nodded toward the door; everyone, even the doctor, filed out.
โWhy did you come out?โ I asked as he closed the door.
Her wounds were healingโslowly, but enough that I felt the space she requested. He hailed an Omega. โCan you bring me a chair, please?โ
โOf course, doctor.โ The Omega hurried off, and the doctor turned back to us.
โIโll sit out here, in case anything happens, but with her healing and the command, I think we will be fine.โ L nodded, and my dad turned to me.
โWhat happened?โ He sounded exhausted. I was still angry, but we had more pressing concerns.
Rowan and I recounted everything we saw and heard. Rowan hesitated when describing finding Cass in the clearing. โIt looked almost staged,โ he said. I looked at him, confused.
โWhat?โ
โWhat do you mean?โ Ronnie pushed himself up from the railing.
โThe attack, the clearingโit looked almost staged. It was weird. Iโm probably overthinking it, but I donโt know.โ
My dad observed him. โExplain what you mean. Donโt worry about how it sounds. Just tell us what you remember.โ
Rowan nodded. โWhen I was a kid, my dad had young Alphas and Betas stage attacks in the capitol.โ He glanced at Ronnie and my father. โYou know the kind.โ They nodded. โIt was like that. We entered the clearing; there was debris everywhere, trees down, blood splatter, but it feltโฆoff. Like someone planned it.โ He paced. โThe other wolf was face down, too bloody to recognizeโlike Cass wanted to disfigure her.โ
Greyson growled. โAre you accusing my mate of something?โ
Rowan raised his hands. โNot at all. I donโt think she was involved.โ
Greyson visibly relaxed. โWhat do you mean?โ
โLike someone came in after she was out cold and staged it?โ I suggested.
He nodded. โYeahโฆlike that.โ
My dad frowned. โBut why would they do that?โ
Ronnie paced. โI feel like weโre missing somethingโฆโ
My dad looked between me and Rowan. โDid you check the other body?โ
Rowan nodded. โNo heartbeat.โ
โAre you sure?โ My dad raised an eyebrow. โBecause magic is very useful in concealing things.โ
