Chapter 526

Cass nodded and rolled away. โ€œThatโ€™s what I thought.โ€

Greyson looked at me; the pain was evident. He slid down and pulled her close. He whimpered, snuggling her, but she remained distant. โ€œYou have to get cleaned up, baby,โ€ he whispered, but she shook her head.

โ€œAs soon as I shower, he will be gone, his scent will be gone, and I canโ€™t face that yet.โ€ I furrowed my brow. Greyson noticed, shook his head, and mouthed, โ€œLater.โ€ I nodded, attempting to comfort her. I patted her back, but she remained rigid.

โ€œPlease, leave,โ€ she said, her voice strained. Turning, she met Greysonโ€™s gaze. โ€œCan you please leave me alone? I just need space.โ€ Tears welled in her eyes; she seemed panicked.

I sensed his fear before anyone else. โ€œWe will leave if you allow me to do one thing?โ€ I leaned closer to meet her gaze.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œLet me command youโ€ฆโ€ My voice softened; she shuddered as I trailed off.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Her eyes narrowed; I heard her teeth grind.

โ€œYour mate is worried, and so am I.โ€ I breathed. โ€œWhen my pup died, I was happy because I knew I was going to follow him into the abyss. I wanted to.โ€ A tear traced a path down her cheek as she closed her eyes.

โ€œDonโ€™t ask me to do that, baby,โ€ Greyson murmured. โ€œDonโ€™t ask me to bury our pup and you. I wouldnโ€™t be able to bear it.โ€ He leaned down, his face close to hers. โ€œIโ€™ll leave. If you let an alpha command you not to hurt yourself.โ€

She shuddered. โ€œJust that?โ€ He nodded. โ€œFine. But not Amy. Alpha Gavin can do it.โ€

I felt a pang of hurt, but I nodded and rose as my dad approached. โ€œCassie, I command you to not harm yourself while you are alone.โ€ The command took effect, and he stepped back.

โ€œNow leave me alone,โ€ she said, tears threatening to overwhelm her as she curled into a fetal position. โ€œItโ€™s okay, baby. Momma loved you so much.โ€ My father nodded toward the door; everyone, even the doctor, filed out.

โ€œWhy did you come out?โ€ I asked as he closed the door.

Her wounds were healingโ€”slowly, but enough that I felt the space she requested. He hailed an Omega. โ€œCan you bring me a chair, please?โ€

โ€œOf course, doctor.โ€ The Omega hurried off, and the doctor turned back to us.

โ€œIโ€™ll sit out here, in case anything happens, but with her healing and the command, I think we will be fine.โ€ L nodded, and my dad turned to me.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ He sounded exhausted. I was still angry, but we had more pressing concerns.

Rowan and I recounted everything we saw and heard. Rowan hesitated when describing finding Cass in the clearing. โ€œIt looked almost staged,โ€ he said. I looked at him, confused.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Ronnie pushed himself up from the railing.

โ€œThe attack, the clearingโ€”it looked almost staged. It was weird. Iโ€™m probably overthinking it, but I donโ€™t know.โ€

My dad observed him. โ€œExplain what you mean. Donโ€™t worry about how it sounds. Just tell us what you remember.โ€

Rowan nodded. โ€œWhen I was a kid, my dad had young Alphas and Betas stage attacks in the capitol.โ€ He glanced at Ronnie and my father. โ€œYou know the kind.โ€ They nodded. โ€œIt was like that. We entered the clearing; there was debris everywhere, trees down, blood splatter, but it feltโ€ฆoff. Like someone planned it.โ€ He paced. โ€œThe other wolf was face down, too bloody to recognizeโ€”like Cass wanted to disfigure her.โ€

Greyson growled. โ€œAre you accusing my mate of something?โ€

Rowan raised his hands. โ€œNot at all. I donโ€™t think she was involved.โ€

Greyson visibly relaxed. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œLike someone came in after she was out cold and staged it?โ€ I suggested.

He nodded. โ€œYeahโ€ฆlike that.โ€

My dad frowned. โ€œBut why would they do that?โ€

Ronnie paced. โ€œI feel like weโ€™re missing somethingโ€ฆโ€

My dad looked between me and Rowan. โ€œDid you check the other body?โ€

Rowan nodded. โ€œNo heartbeat.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ My dad raised an eyebrow. โ€œBecause magic is very useful in concealing things.โ€
