โ€œThere are my two favorite girls.โ€ My dad walked into my room just as we got back.

โ€œHi Daddy.โ€ I walked over and hugged him, and [Cassie] bowed her head. โ€œHi Alpha Devlin.โ€ โ€œNone of that Cassie, when itโ€™s just us. Iโ€™ve told you just to call me Dev.โ€ Cas blushed and nodded. โ€œCan I speak with my daughter alone for a minute?โ€ โ€œOf course, Alpha.โ€ Cas looked at me with a tiny bit of panic in her eyes as she turned away. I tried to reassure her, but I couldnโ€™t do much. She knew exactly what this conversation was about. I followed my father to his office and sat down with Ronnie and him. โ€œTalk.โ€ โ€œWhat is going on in this pack, Dad?โ€ โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ โ€œWhy are unranked she-wolves lording their power over the weaker wolves?โ€ I looked over at Ronnie, and he looked away. โ€œYou obviously know what I am talking about. What exactly are the beta and gamma females doing?โ€ โ€œHey!โ€ Ronnie looked at me. โ€œThat isnโ€™t fair.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not saying itโ€™s fair.โ€ I looked back at my father. โ€œYou are letting your pack crumble from within, and I want to know why.โ€ I stared my father in the eye until Loki was growling back at me, but Nix growled right back.

I refused to back down when a pack I loved was falling apart. The rumble of his threat got louder, but I held firm. My dad finally smiled, and Nix receded. โ€œYou have grown up.โ€ I nodded, but I raised my eyebrow, and my father huffed. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t supposed to fall so quickly.โ€ โ€œWhat are you even talking about?โ€ โ€œIt was Ronnieโ€™s plan.โ€ My father started, and I glanced at my uncle, who went a little pale. โ€œLook, I thought it would work.โ€ โ€œWhat exactly?โ€ โ€œI thought if your mother saw her friends and family falling apart, she would come back.โ€ My fatherโ€™s voice grew quiet with each word. I threw up my hands in frustration. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t speak to anyone here anymore. She asked the Alpha to forbid anyone from speaking to her about your pack so she could have peace.โ€ I shook my head. โ€œWhat were you thinking?โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t.โ€ My dad put his head in his hands. โ€œItโ€™s been years, Amy. Years without my mate.โ€ โ€œI know.โ€ I got up and hugged him from the side. โ€œMom thinks you betrayed her, and she is still pretty broken up about it.โ€ โ€œI know. But I thought her Luna duties would override the betrayal.โ€ My dad looked up at me, and I laughed at his face. โ€œYou are a stupid man, Dad.โ€ I just shook my head and sat back down. I turned on Ronnie. โ€œAnd so are you, Uncle.โ€ โ€œHey!โ€ He called out, but I just looked at him until he nodded. โ€œWe have to fix your pack this summer, too. I wonโ€™t be able to go back to Momโ€™s pack without knowing this bullshit has stopped.โ€ โ€œOkay, sugar. We can fix it.โ€ โ€œNo, no, you canโ€™t.โ€ I felt Nix agree with my thoughts before I voiced them. โ€œThis is for the women to fix. I want the beta and gamma to meet with me before the party tonight.โ€ My dad jolted back in surprise, and I laughed. โ€œYou asked my best friend to keep a surprise from me, Dad. First off, stupid move. You know she canโ€™t keep a secret. Second, even if she hadnโ€™t blurted out the truth, I would have figured out something from Aurora.โ€ I glanced at my father, and I watched his expression cloud over. โ€œUgh, now youโ€™ve done it.โ€ Ronnie huffed out a breath before sitting back. โ€œWhat?โ€ โ€œAny time someone says her name, or he sees her, his eyes glaze over, and he wonโ€™t shut the heck up about her.โ€ โ€œShe is so beautiful. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen.โ€ โ€œEven prettier than my mom?โ€ I threw it out without a thought, knowing he would say no, but to my surprise, without even hesitating, he said yes. โ€œOf course, your mother doesnโ€™t even hold a candle to the beauty of Aurora.โ€ I got to my feet and walked over, grabbing my dadโ€™s face as I felt something was amiss.

His eyes were still unfocused. โ€œIs it always like this when her name is mentioned?โ€ โ€œYup. For at least five minutes, then he goes back to being normal like nothing happened.โ€ Ronnie rolled his eyes. โ€œAnd this is normal to you?โ€ I looked at Ronnie over my shoulder and noticed his eyes were unfocused as well. โ€œYeah, why wouldnโ€™t it be?โ€ Ronnieโ€™s eyes looked through me. And I knew something was wrong. โ€œDad?โ€ I pulled his face to mine and swiped my cheek against his, sending a little of my aura out at the same time, and my dad pulled away. โ€œSweetie, how did you get over here?โ€ My dad smiled, and I felt my knees go weak. Something was horribly wrong here, and I didnโ€™t have long to figure it out.
