Chapter 302: The Girl Who Went Ghost Hunting at Night

When Ye Mo returned home, he immediately began treating his wounds with chi. He didn't know why Luo Xuan had come, but her arrival made him anxious. He needed to recover his strength quickly; he sensed she wasn't alone and that she was here for something.
After several meridian cycles, Ye Mo opened his eyes. His wounds felt better. He nodded, stood up, and looked outside. The sky was darkening.
He heard his neighbor's door open. Using his spirit sense, Ye Mo learned Luo Xuan had returned. Curious about her origins, he scanned his spirit sense into her room.
With his current power, Luo Xuan couldn't detect his spirit sense. Once he reached the chi gathering middle stage, even ordinary earth-level cultivators wouldn't be able to find it.
But soon, Ye Mo was stunned. Luo Xuan was a nun; her luggage contained several sets of nun's clothing.
So many nuns in the city? Ye Mo surmised she was a disciple of some sect, possibly a hidden one.
He grew cautious. Was a hidden sect disciple too dangerous?
But he didn't want to move. He'd finally found a suitable place for cultivation and pill concoction.
After much thought, he concluded Luo Xuan wasn't there for him. She must have been here for something else. In a week, his wounds would heal, and he could escape if necessary.
While Luo Xuan packed, Ye Mo noticed a large pile of books. It seemed she really was studying at Ke University. He kept his spirit sense on her and saw that after packing, she took some clothes and went to the bathroom, presumably to shower. Ye Mo didn't follow her with his spirit sense; he wasn't interested in watching a young girl shower.
He withdrew his spirit sense and resumed cultivating. A few hours later, he heard a knock on the building's roof. He stood, scanned his spirit sense toward Luo Xuan, and found she'd also heard the knock on the ninth floor. Unlike him, she stood abruptly, apparently having been meditating.
Her face was pale. Though a yellow level middle stage ancient martial artist, she was clearly afraid.
Ye Mo chuckled. Weren't nuns supposed to catch ghosts? Yet she was scared by a knocking sound. He watched her walk to the balcony, presumably to close the window.
However, she actually climbed onto the balcony and crawled to the ninth floor. Ye Mo had to admire her courage. She dared to go ghost hunting at midnight. She was doing her job.
"Who's there? Show yourself!"
Luo Xuan drew a long sword and shouted.
Ye Mo kept his spirit sense near her, also wanting to see what was causing the knocking. Human or ghost? It was unlikely to be human; he'd found nothing with his spirit sense the previous night.
The ninth floor was silent. The knocking stopped when Luo Xuan arrived.
Sword in hand, she walked into the living room. Ye Mo saw her anxiety.
Suddenly, Luo Xuan's sword flashed out. Her body recoiled several steps, then she retreated back onto the balcony, seemingly knocked back by something.
Ye Mo was shocked. Something his spirit sense couldn't see? He realized his wounds had weakened his spirit sense. Focusing it, he scanned again. The range was smaller, but he detected a faint black shadow charging at Luo Xuan.
A yin spirit? How could this be? If so, it was much stronger than the one at Shen Nong Jia.
However, the attacks didn't seriously injure Luo Xuan; they mostly frightened her.
Luo Xuan descended from the ninth floor. Just as Ye Mo wondered if he should help, she kicked off the eighth-floor balcony and rushed into her room, her light-footedness impressive.
The faint shadow didn't pursue and vanished from the ninth floor. Though Ye Mo searched, he couldn't find it again. He wasn't in a hurry; once his wounds healed, nothing would be able to hide.
His spirit sense returned to Luo Xuan. She sat in her room, pale, but took a jade vase, extracted a pill, and ate it. Her complexion improved.
Then, she took a peachwood sword, hung it on her door, and began meditating.
Though only yellow level middle stage, she was brave. But how did she see the ghost? Ye Mo doubted she possessed spirit sense.
A night passed.
The next morning, Ye Mo awoke and cleaned himself. A knock came at his door. Stunnedโhe'd been there two weeks with no visitorsโhe used his spirit sense and found Luo Xuan.
He opened the door and examined her. Her complexion was fine but showed fatigue from the previous night.
Seeing Ye Mo was unharmed, a flicker of relief crossed her eyes. Then, she looked at him blocking the doorway and said, "We're neighbors. The landlord asked you to look after me. Won't you invite me in?"
He didn't understand her intentions but, since she'd said it, he opened the door. "Please, come in."
Luo Xuan smiled. Ye Mo sighed. She was almost as beautiful as Ning Qingxue. No wonder Young Master Wu had drooled over her. Thinking of Qingxue, a pang of sadness touched him. He couldn't help but also think of Luo Ying. Once he reached stage 4 chi gathering, he could fly on his sword and search for her.
Noticing his sadness, Luo Xuan showed a brief shock before recovering her composure and sitting down. Casually surveying his apartment, she said, "I'm Luo Xuan. I study at Ke University. We're neighbors. I don't know your name."
"I'm Mo Ying, a jobless nomad. I might look for work soon." Ye Mo saw her strange look and felt uneasy, so he explained. He intended to find work, just not immediately.
As if she'd understood his thoughts, Luo Xuan didn't press him. She seemed to have formed an opinion of himโlazy and fond of prostitutes. Smiling, she cut to the chase. "I heard this place is unclean. Have you lived here long?"
She was here to investigate. Ye Mo smiled, knowing her intentions. Having no information for her, he said, "Less than a month."
Unsure if she was investigating, he gave a vague timeline. She seemed astute and might know more if he told the truth.
However, he'd overthought it. Luo Xuan asked, "Living here so long, have you seen or heard anything strange?"
Ye Mo shook his head. "No. I sleep all day. Why would I care?"
"Haven't you heard this house is haunted? People died here, so it couldn't be sold or rented." Luo Xuan seemed unsatisfied, trying to scare him.
Ye Mo stretched. "I'm poor and lazy. A ghost wouldn't bother me. Besides, teachers taught us not to be superstitious. Even without university, I know that. You're in university and still superstitious? Little sister, it's not easy to become a university student. Don't be so superstitious."
"Youโฆ" Luo Xuan stood up, angry, but her anger subsided. She looked at him and smiled. "You flattered a young master yesterday. You won't be poor forever. Though you're not superstitious, my hometown has ghost stories and customs. Hang this peachwood sword on your bedroom door. It might help."
Ye Mo frowned. Something was wrong with this girl. He'd been unfriendly, yet she gave him a gift. What were her intentions?
