Chapter 609: As If You’d Dare To Shoot

“What’s going on?” Bai Youxi asked, rising worriedly as he heard the mafia was after Shi Xiu. He pulled a girl beside him to her feet, saying, “We have to go.”

He’d barely reached the door when he was kicked back inside. A voice sneered from the doorway, “Since you’re here, don’t even think about leaving. My Big Brother said to wait. He’ll be here soon.”

“This doesn’t concern me!” Bai Youxi protested, but no one listened.

“Ye Mo, who is this?” Shi Xiu asked, indicating Luo Ying.

Ye Mo smiled, taking Luo Ying’s hand. “This is my wife, Luo Ying. Susu, this is Shi Xiu, a former classmate and friend.”

“Nice to meet you. Sorry for constantly dragging Ye Mo into my troubles,” Shi Xiu said, realizing his predicament. Who else deserved such a beautiful woman?

“Hello,” Luo Ying replied with a polite smile. Her attention remained on Ye Mo; she only responded because he introduced Shi Xiu as a friend. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have spoken. She disliked talking to strangers.

Ignoring the men at the door, Ye Mo told Wang Chu to close it. Then, “Everyone, sit. Shi Xiu, tell us what happened.”

Shi Xiu sighed. “Brother Li told me about the Jiu Tang City case, so I wanted to help. Initially, everything was fine after the second hearing, but Young Master Heng’s arrival caused major problems.”

“Young Master Heng? Who is that?” Ye Mo asked, surprised.

Shi Xiu shook his head. “We don’t know his full name, but Brother Chunsheng said he might be from the Dai family. He’s very powerful. Brother Chunsheng’s local influence means nothing to him.”

Ye Mo knew of the Dai family; Shi Xiu had mentioned them before. Since the Song and Qiao families left Beijing, the Dai and Qiu families had risen. But even if this Young Master was Dai, the Li family shouldn’t fear him. Why were they attacking Li Chunsheng, and the Li family doing nothing? Li Chunsheng was practically family.

Xue Guoyang asked, “If even Brother Li can’t afford to be enemies with this Young Master, why is he interfering in the Jiu Tang case?”

“Brother Chunsheng told me Young Master Heng has a new lover—Yi Zhu’s daughter. Yi Zhu is Yi Jiuhe’s second brother. As soon as Young Master Heng intervened, rumors of Brother Chunsheng’s corruption surfaced.

Worse, rumors linked Brother Chunsheng to Yi Jiuhe’s death, claiming he was involved because of an affair with Yi Jiuhe’s wife. These rumors are false, but he can’t refute them,” Shi Xiu explained dejectedly.

Ye Mo frowned. Even if the man was trying to curry favor with his father-in-law, he should only try to win the case. Why challenge political norms? No matter Dai Heng’s background, he wouldn’t falsely accuse a provincial official. Something didn’t feel right.

Shi Xiu continued, “It was also rumored he attacked the Yuan family in He Feng because they didn’t share their illicit gains properly. ‘How else would he know so much about them?’ the rumors say.”

Hearing this, Ye Mo understood the situation was far more complex.

Shi Xiu said, “The day Brother Chunsheng was arrested, he sent me a letter telling me to leave immediately. Knowing things were dire, I left Xi Tong with Xiao Tan that night. Brother Chunsheng wanted me to find you.”

“What about the Li family? Did Li Qiuyang say anything?” Ye Mo asked.

The Li family was one of China’s most powerful. Li Qiuyang, while not the strongest of the younger generation, was certainly top three.

With Li Qiuyang’s support, how could Li Chunsheng fall to the Dai family? Especially since Li Chunsheng was on the right side of the law.

Shi Xiu sighed, “I heard something happened to Li Qiuyang. I don’t know the details. The Li family isn’t the number one family anymore. The Dai and Qiu families teamed up, backed by most of Beijing.”

Ye Mo wasn’t interested in such politics, but Li Chunsheng was a good man who’d helped him, so he had to act.

“How is he? The case? Why are gangsters hunting you?” Ye Mo asked.

“I couldn’t contact Brother Chunsheng, so I came to Jiu Tang to gather evidence. Needing help, I borrowed money. I only borrowed yesterday, but they now demand ten times the amount. I couldn’t pay, so they’re hunting me. Lu Lin is probably locked up. Brother Chunsheng asked me to look after Yi Yan and Yi Xiaodie, but I couldn’t find them.”

“Shi Xiu, did you borrow from Black Head?” Liu Yahua suddenly asked.

Shi Xiu nodded.

Liu Yahua’s face fell. “Shi Xiu, you’ve brought trouble on us all. Black Head rules Jiu Tang. Those who borrow from him lose everything. Why did you borrow from him?”

“Shut up, Liu Yahua. You and Bai Youxi are both the same. Shi Xiu asked for your help, so if you can’t, shut up!” Xue Guoyang snapped.

Bang! The door burst open. An African-American man with a cigarette and tattooed head entered, followed by his thugs.

“Shi Xiu, you’re bold, making me come personally. Hmm?” The man stopped abruptly upon seeing Luo Ying beside Ye Mo.

“Wow, such a beauty!” He approached Luo Ying.

Worry etched onto everyone’s faces, but Shi Xiu remained calm.

Ye Mo sneered, kicking the man in the chest.

The man spat blood, crashing into the wall.

“You! Kill—” He spat more blood. His body burned, his organs shattered. Rage consumed him, but a gun pointed at his head silenced him.

Everyone froze. The black man reacted swiftly, snarling, “As if you’d dare to shoo—”

Before he finished, Ye Mo fired. Blood splattered across the man’s forehead as disbelief filled his eyes.
