Chapter 99: A Superficial Man
Divine, a plump but beautiful girl, knew Greg disliked her, but she hadn't expected his contempt. "Greg, give me back my phone," she said, attempting to stand. Greg pushed her hard, causing her to fall and bruise her knee.
He sneered, his eyes shining with abhorrence. "I'm borrowing your phone for today. I'll return it tomorrow." He then got into his car, sped off, leaving her on the highway.
Divine struggled to her feet. Her knee bled, each step agonizing. Darkness fell, and rain began to pour. She trudged home, the torrential rain blinding her. Cold and aching, tears streamed down her face. It was, she concluded, the worst day of her life. Greg had shattered her pride and dignity.
She worried about Olive. Greg had stolen her phone to obtain information to defame her.
The Hart Family
Pamela furiously stared at Greg's message and the accompanying picture, consumed by jealousy and hatred. Initially, Elvis had struck her as handsome and reserved, his mannerisms elegant and dignified. He was low-key, veiled, mysterious, and cold—qualities that had fascinated her since their first meeting. His private life appeared spotless, devoid of female companionship. She believed him to be unsullied.
However, he surprised her. He’d given Olive his card, bought her an exorbitant necklace, and showered her with attention at the bar and his office. He was no different from other men she knew; he was clearly captivated by Olive.
Pamela reflected on Raven and North; they were the same, she decided. Each man's center of attraction was himself. All men, she concluded, were alike: they preferred beautiful women, the more beautiful the better.
Her jealousy was overwhelming. "Why not me? Why Olive or North?" she raged inwardly.
She messaged Greg: "Team leader Greg, you've done a great job. Now, log into the Ivory Council student group and expose this photo."
Greg replied swiftly: "If I hadn't seen it myself, I wouldn't believe Olive is involved with the Augustine Corporation president."
Another message followed: "Although she passed Director Hudson's test, she's married. The students will tear her apart when they hear this. Use Divine's account to post it; we won't be traced. This will also damage Olive and Divine's relationship."
Pamela replied, "Wow, you're so smart, Pamela."
Originally, Pamela hadn't intended to expose Olive and Elvis's relationship, but fearing it would slip from her grasp, she acted decisively to protect her chances of securing her dream position. She also convinced herself that her unmarried status gave her an advantage over Olive.
A knock sounded. Patrick's anxious voice called, "Pamela, are you in there?"
Pamela opened the door. "Dad, what's wrong?"
"Pamela, what's going on between President Augustine and Olive? I didn't take it seriously at first. What kind of man is Elvis? How can he like Olive? If he liked you, the number one socialite, it would be understandable. These rumors… I'm confused."
Patrick, who had envisioned himself as the father-in-law of a wealthy president, was now bewildered.
"Dad, what have you heard?" Pamela asked.
"People are asking if Olive is divorced and engaged to Elvis."
Pamela clenched her fists, realizing the bar incident had sparked the rumors. Smiling, she said, "Dad, Olive's been married to the Red Villa family for a long time. You haven't met your son-in-law yet. Why don't you pay him a visit?"
