Natalia’s POV
At long last, the day of the werewolf council's party arrived. I was extremely anxious. Over the past five years, I’d attended many parties, but most were smaller affairs. This was different; I had to face many new people, including one I desperately wanted to avoid.
"Shall we enter, my lady?"
I turned to see Eric. He extended his arm as he approached, and I nodded, placing my hand on his.
The hall was breathtaking. The sheer power emanating from those present, combined with the opulent decorations, left me awestruck. A large number of Alpha and Luna couples were in attendance. It wasn't just a party; it was a werewolf council conference.
I squeezed Eric's hand, took a deep breath, and whispered, "I can do it."
The hall was filled with wealthy individuals flaunting their riches. Women wore lavish gowns by renowned designers; men sported expensive, handmade suits. My brother had chosen a very expensive black satin gown for me.
Eric and I were the center of much attention. Men stared, but I ignored them. Some younger women seemed…
Eric introduced me to several council members. He was a well-known Beta, highly respected, which pleased me.
"I can't believe we're finally meeting you, Natalia Hansley. We've only heard about you for years," one council member said.
I smiled. "It's a delight to be here. Thank you for the invitation."
"We'd love to introduce you to every—"
"Excuse me, sir, but might I make a request?" I interrupted.
They exchanged glances and nodded.
Eric pulled me aside. "What's on your mind, Nat?"
I shook my head. "Don't worry."
"I want you all to keep my identity a secret."
They looked stunned. "What do you mean?"
"I don't want anyone to know who I am."
"But why?"
"I have my reasons."
They nodded. "She's a tough one," one said to Eric, chuckling. Eric joined in, and I, feeling bewildered, laughed sheepishly.
Did they think I have feelings for Eric? I thought, shaking my head.
Eric spoke to the council members about our pack, since my brother, the Alpha, couldn't attend.
I excused myself and went to a corner. A waiter offered champagne, and I took a few sips. My eyes scanned the hall, observing the unfamiliar faces.
Then, an angry voice cut through the air.
"Natalia, what are you doing here?"
I turned to see two women from the Crystal Blood Pack.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
They scoffed. "We thought you were dead."
The hall fell silent. I sensed a powerful presence entering—the women did too, but continued their taunts.
"Seriously, after being dumped by Alpha Adrian, how are you even alive?" one sneered.
I focused on them. "Done?" I asked, my voice tight.
Their mockery ceased, and they grew agitated. Did they think I'd engage? Never. They were nothing but clout chasers.
"You have no shame! You're not a Luna anymore! Are you here to try and win our Alpha's attention again?" one spat.
I frowned. "Shut your nonsense and leave me alone!"
They were surprised by my retort. One raised her hand to strike me, but I grabbed her wrist. My eyes, however, fell on someone else.
A man in a black, handmade suit stood there, captivating as always. Now I understood the sudden silence—him. Danger radiated from him. His dark eyes—eyes I almost forgot—were fixed on me. My past flooded back in a single glance.
"Leave my hand," I heard the woman whimper. I'd gripped her too tightly. I released her, turning my attention back to the man.
"I advise you to disguise yourself in front of your Alpha," I said.
The woman's eyes widened. Both women quickly adopted an innocent demeanor, bowing to the man.
"Alpha Adrian."
I sneered at them and looked back at Adrian. He stared solemnly at me, ignoring the women. Rage filled his eyes.
The women fled. As Adrian took a step toward me, he spoke, his tone icy.
"How dare—"
His words were cut short. My wolf reacted unexpectedly, becoming excited and chanting, "MATE."
