I couldn't understand my brother's distrust of everyone. I only distrusted one person, but he himself had surrendered leadership of our pack.
I turned to Jason. "Why did you do that, brother?" I asked telepathically.
I knew he couldn't answer. I wanted to know what he'd learned and what the truth was. I hoped he would wake soon, and we could return to our former lives.
Silence fell. No one spoke.
My father sighed, muttering, "Maybe he wanted to save us from Alpha Leo's attack. That's why he yielded."
I listened without comment. The head Alpha was now Adrian—that was the only certainty.
I shifted my gaze to my children. I'd already lost my pack; I couldn't lose my babies.
"Mom? Dad? What will I do now? Adrian knows the truth. He won't stay quiet."
My mother embraced me. Tears welled up as I hugged her. "Why didn't you both escape?"
I wasn't blaming them, but the escape route was there. What if any of them had died in the war?
My mother released me. "Natalia, Alpha Leo's wolves attacked our pack house through the back door."
I was shocked. "What? How did they know about it?"
My father put a hand on my head. I looked at him tearfully.
"We tried to save your children. I even told your mother to escape, but they broke in through the back door. It was as if"
I was confused. "But Dad, only we knew about that door. No one else, not even Alpha's family or officials, was aware of it."
"Maybe Alpha Leo checked the pack house during the pack meeting," our theta suggested.
It was possible. I sat hopelessly on the bed, unsure of the future.
"But Natalia, why did you come to the war? Didn't Jason tell you not to?" Eric asked.
I turned to him. "Why did Jason forbid the guards from giving me information?"
"It was for your safety."
"He shouldn't have. I could have helped him. It's good Gamma informed me."
Eric frowned. "Gamma?"
I raised an eyebrow. "Yes. He contacted me telepathically, saying Jason's life was in danger."
Eric's expression changed. "Why did he tell you?"
I didn't understand. "He told me to tell Dad to join the war to save Jason. That's why I went."
"But if he wanted me there, why didn't he contact me directly?" my father asked.
He was right. Why had Gamma contacted me?
A realization struck me. I jumped up, shocked.
Turning to Eric, I asked, "Where is Gamma? I didn't see him during the war. Why didn't he try to save Jason when Alpha Leo attacked him?"
