The following day, I was working in my office when I heard a knock.
"Come in," I said.
Beta Patric entered, accompanied by a young man. The young man bowed.
"All hail to our Alpha," he said.
I ignored him; I was preoccupied. My curiosity, however, was piqued by the man's presence. I looked at Patric.
"This is Blake," Patric explained. "He's our spy. He has information about Eric."
My attention shifted to Blake. "What did you find?" I asked.
Blake handed me a file and bowed. "Everything is in the file, Alpha. We won't disclose anything without your permission."
"You may leave," I said.
Blake bowed again and departed. Patric, eager to learn about Beta Eric, glanced at the file.
The file contained Beta Eric's biodata. I began to read. It stated that he didn't come from a large family; his parents died when he was young. Alpha Martin, recognizing his fighting potential, took him in and housed him. A close friendship developed between Martin's son and Eric. Alpha Martin decided…
"Interesting," I murmured.
Due to his close ties to the royal family, Eric was one of the pack's most well-known members. Further information included a compliment from his pack's elder: "Their beta can kill a hundred wolves alone."
I scoffed. "How many wolves have I killed in the last war?" I asked Patric.
He was startled. Glancing at the file, he approached me. "Are you comparing yourself to Eric?"
I glared. "Why would I?"
He chuckled and shook his head. "Don't show me your teeth. Just answer the question."
"Over a thousand," I replied.
I grinned at his response. "With all the compliments her lover receives, that woman must be very proud. How silly!"
"Someone here is looking silly," Patric muttered.
"Did you say something?" I asked, turning to him.
He smiled nervously. "Isn't it obvious? You're the most powerful Alpha. Of course, you've killed more wolves than any beta."
I ignored his comment and continued reading. Something caught my eye, eliciting a smirk.
"He's a playboy. He's had many girlfriends."
"But they're all in the past."
"So what? That woman will be his past, too."
Patric stared silently.
"What?" I asked.
He shook his head. "I don't understand what you want. It seems you don't either."
"Stop overthinking. What did I ask you last night? Did you find anything?"
Patric nodded. "Our men are on it. You'll get it soon."
I remained in my office until late evening. I stood, went to the couches, sat down, and lit a cigarette. While smoking and looking outside, thoughts of Natalia returned. I assumed the children weren't hers; perhaps she was their nanny. Otherwise, how could they be so old?
Someone opened the door. It was Patric. He closed the door and approached me. His nervousness made me frown.
I blew out smoke, inhaled deeply, and asked, "Who dared to scare my beta?"
He gulped, lowering his head.
"What?" I pressed. His sudden nervousness was baffling.
"Adrian," he muttered.
"I'm listening," I replied, turning back to the window.
He spoke shakily, "They're Natalia's children."
My fingers froze around the cigarette. "What did you say?"
He nodded, placing a tablet in front of me. The children's birthdate was five years ago!
"What the hell! How is that possible?" I yelled.
He remained silent, head bowed.
"Who's their father?" I demanded. I clearly remembered Natalia wasn't pregnant when she left. Whose children could they be?
"I'm not sure, but many saw the children with Eric constantly. He even attends their school's parent-teacher meetings."
My blood boiled. "Did Natalia and Eric get together before the divorce?" I gritted my teeth.
Patric quietly reminded me, "You were the one who wanted the divorce."
I clenched my fists, recalling Natalia's confession of love.
(Flashback)
"I want a divorce."
Throughout our marriage, I'd felt only disgust for Natalia. She always pretended innocence. I hated her.
"Hubby, please, no divorce?" Natalia pleaded, tears in her eyes.
I glared. "Why? Do you want to be this pack's Luna?"
She shook her head, hugging me. I tried to push her away, but her grip tightened.
"Please don't talk about divorce. I… I love you, Adrian…"
(End Flashback)
I snapped back to the present, overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. I'd thought she loved me, then left because of Lynda. But the reason was something else entirely—she was carrying another man's children!
I stood, causing Patric to flinch. I kicked the coffee table in rage.
"Liar!"
