Listen to this chapter:

Adrian followed Natalia's car, unsure why. His mother's announcement of her departure had unsettled him. How could she leave his pack without his permission?

Suddenly, rain began to fall. Looking up, he saw the overcast sky.

"It's raining," he muttered.

The slick road mirrored the stormy sky. Loud thunder echoed through the street. Adrian's gaze remained fixed on the red taillights of Natalia's car.

He dialed her number, wanting to stop her and ask questions. He felt uneasy about her leaving. His anger grew with each unanswered call; the unknown worry gnawed at him. He found her actions frustrating.

"Why isn't she answering?" he muttered, clenching the steering wheel until his knuckles whitened.

The winter rain intensified the fog, making visibility extremely poor. His recent fights with Natalia flooded his mind; her harsh words hung in the air like dark clouds.

"Does she think I can't stop her?" he groaned, accelerating.

Meanwhile, Natalia stared at her phone. Adrian was calling. She didn't know what he wanted, but she felt no obligation to answer. She wasn't a member of his pack, nor he hers.

She switched off her phone and put it in her bag. She didn't want to talk to him.

"I want to go home quickly," she told her driver.

He glanced in the rearview mirror. "Yes, Miss. I'm driving faster."

She nodded, looking out the window. Sitting in the back seat, she reviewed the past week's events, solidifying her decision to never return to this pack.

She watched the rain on the window, a reflection of her inner turmoil. Her life mirrored the dreary weather. Her mission to help Alpha Lucas was complete; she was going home, to her twins. Their behavior toward their father troubled her.

One question dominated her thoughts: "What if they learn about their relationship? What will happen then?"

The engine's roar and the swish of the wipers lulled her almost to sleep, but the rhythm of the rain on the roof mingled with her thoughts, a soundtrack to her memories. The rain seemed to pull her deeper into her past.

The calm was shattered by the driver's shaky voice.

"Miss, the brakes aren't working!"

Her eyes widened. "What?!"

Fear constricted her. The feeling of safety vanished. She looked at the road; her driver was right. The brakes had failed. He struggled to control the car on the slick road. The car was losing control.

As they approached an incline, time seemed to slow.

"BE CAREFU—"

Her voice was cut short by a violent jerk. The car spun. Panic overwhelmed Natalia; she felt she was going to die.

Meanwhile, Adrian, still following, saw everything in his headlights. His heart lurched as Natalia's car spun wildly. The scene was nightmarish; he trembled in disbelief.

He didn't hesitate, acting on instinct. Ignoring the danger to himself, he drove toward Natalia's car. His heart pounding, he prayed silently.

With a powerful shove, Adrian's car stopped Natalia's deadly spin, the screech of metal echoing as the collision halted the car inches from a catastrophic crash.
