Chapter 1120

Aubree called Lucian near Estella's dismissal time to collect the little girl from school. He readily agreed, assuming there would be no problem, as they had seemed to get along well that morning.

However, since an earlier incident at school, Estella's classmates had begun to shun her, regarding her as strange. She endured a day of ostracism, making her miss Archie and Benny even more. Her dejection deepened as school ended. Seeing Aubree waiting, her face fell.

"Essie!" Aubree greeted warmly, oblivious to the child's expression.

Pamela, the teacher, politely greeted Aubree and commented on Estella's day. "Essie was a good girl in class today. She's just not very familiar with the other children and wasn't very enthusiastic during games. But I'm sure she'll improve in a few days."

Aubree thanked Pamela profusely. After pleasantries, she remembered her purpose โ€“ collecting Estella. The little girl was now hungry and even more despondent.

Aubree apologized to Pamela and ushered Estella into the car. "Ms. Yaxley says you weren't enthusiastic during games. Is it because you don't like the other children?"

Aubree's earlier interaction likely fostered a false sense of ease. "I know you want to play with those two boys, but they can't always come. You should try to make new friends."

Estella erupted. "I don't want to! Archie and Benny will visit! I'll still play with them! I don't need new friends!"

Aubree was taken aback. "I'm saying this for your own good. You'll feel better if you make more friends."

"I'm not sick!" Estella retorted.

Aubree realized her mistake. "I didn't mean it that way. I just thought..." She struggled to rectify the situation, but her initial intention remained unchanged, only poorly masked.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. Can you forgive me, Essie?" Aubree apologized.

Estella remained silent. Aubree deeply regretted her misstep, recognizing their relationship had regressed. Despite repeated attempts to salvage the situation on their drive home, she received no response.

Pulling into the Farwell driveway, Aubree felt immense remorse. Lucian had that morning commented on their improved relationship, making this current silence all the more painful. She wished to shield him from this.

However, Estella, uncooperative, marched into the house. Lucian, having just returned from work, immediately noted Estella's demeanor.

"What's wrong?" he asked, concerned.

Estella only pursed her lips, silently heading upstairs.
