“Mommy, please don’t dislike Mr. Farwell,” Benny pleaded, tugging at her sleeve. Devastated by Roxanne’s earlier response, he continued, “Even though Mr. Farwell has made you angry, he still cares a lot about you. Every time you were sick, he was always by your side.”

His words sparked a flicker in Roxanne’s eyes, tugging at her heart. It was true; since her return, Lucian had been there for her whenever she was unwell. Before that, she’d had no one to care for her except the children, doing their clumsy best.

“I can’t deny that Lucian has given me a sense of security, but…”

Oblivious to her internal struggle, Benny mumbled, “Mr. Farwell treats you very well, and he doesn’t let us…”

Archie’s sharp poke interrupted him. Biting his tongue, Benny hastily changed the subject. “No matter what, Mr. Farwell is the best. Can you stop quarreling with him already?”

Roxanne’s brow furrowed. “What did you mean just now? What else did Mr. Farwell do?”

Benny hung his head, guilt evident. The expression on his face only piqued Roxanne’s curiosity further. Archie realized it was too late to cover Benny’s slip; further attempts would only heighten Roxanne’s suspicions.

“It was Mr. Farwell who took care of you when you were drunk,” Archie stated frankly.

His words triggered Roxanne’s memory of that night. She’d initially dismissed it as a dream, never expecting it to be real. The question remained: when had he left?

“Mommy, Benny is right. Can you stop fighting with Mr. Farwell?” Archie smoothly shifted the topic. “We really like playing with Essie. Every time you two quarrel, we can’t see her.”

The mention of Estella distracted Roxanne, who offered Archie an apologetic glance. Can what’s happening between Lucian and me even be called a quarrel? Perhaps in the past, but given Lucian’s stance, it’s clear he wants to end things. It was a reality Roxanne couldn’t ignore, but she didn’t know how to explain it to the boys.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t want things to turn out this way either, but it’s not as simple as you think,” she explained, her face pale.

Archie nodded understandingly. “I understand, Mommy. But can you convince Mr. Farwell to let Essie return to kindergarten?”

A conflicted expression clouded Roxanne’s face. “Darling, Mr. Farwell is Essie’s father, and he has his reasons for transferring her.”

“He doesn’t want Essie to see us because you two are fighting,” Archie countered.

Roxanne was surprised by Archie’s knowledge and boldness.

“I feel Essie shouldn’t have been moved so suddenly. If Mr. Farwell doesn’t want her to see us, we’re willing to transfer out instead,” Archie declared.
