Pamela, distracted, dared not lie under Lucian’s gaze. Mid-sentence, she appealed to Roxanne, who seamlessly continued the explanation.
“The children crowded around Estella, saying things and even stepping on her hand. She resisted, but they pushed her down. I only intervened when I couldn’t bear to watch any longer.”
Roxanne suspected the children’s taunts but avoided further upsetting Estella. Lucian’s expression chilled as she spoke, and Roxanne’s anger flared. “The intensity of this bullying suggests it’s been happening for days. Mr. Farwell, did you know nothing of this?” she questioned. The thought that Lucian’s neglect stemmed from his relationship with Aubree and the prospect of another child pierced Roxanne’s heart; she clutched Estella tighter.
Lucian remained silent, but approached. Roxanne instinctively tried to retreat, but the couch blocked her. He stood before her, causing her to tense. Just as she was about to question him, Lucian reached for Estella’s injured hand. After examining it, he turned to Pamela. “Is this how your kindergarten cares for children?”
Pamela’s heart sank. She’d underestimated Estella’s vulnerability and the children’s hostility, leaving her speechless when Lucian discovered the incident. “I’m sorry, Mr. Farwell. This was an oversight on my—”
Lucian interrupted. “This conflict wasn’t recent, yet you only learned of it today. If the kindergarten can’t manage children’s disputes, my daughter will no longer attend!”
Panic seized Pamela. “Mr. Farwell, this was truly an oversight. I’ll be more attentive in the future. Please don’t reprimand me so harshly.” She again looked pleadingly at Roxanne.
Roxanne, though angered by Pamela’s negligence, found Lucian’s response unreasonable. “Mr. Farwell, shouldn’t you reflect on your own actions before blaming the teacher? I refuse to believe Estella acted perfectly normal at home these past few days. Did you notice nothing amiss?”
Pamela was stunned by Roxanne’s boldness, realizing she was no longer the focus. Relieved, she quietly retreated. Lucian, however, was captivated by Roxanne’s words. He had no defense. Aubree had been handling Estella’s kindergarten transport; he’d had minimal interaction with the teachers. While he’d noticed Estella’s subdued mood, he’d attributed it to disliking the new school. He never imagined this.
