Chapter 1164
Meanwhile, Lucian was conducting his weekly wrap-up meeting in a Farwell Group conference room. Upper management watched him apprehensively from across the long table. They had been cautious for the past two days; Lucian's mood had been noticeably sour. The tension was palpable. When it came time for progress reports, everyone proceeded with extreme caution, fearing a single misstep might provoke his wrath. Department directors with poor performance didn't even dare look up.
A knock on the door broke the tense silence. The presenting director paused, following the collective gaze of his colleagues. All eyes turned to the doorway.
Cayden, looking awkward, entered, holding Lucian's phone. He offered a hesitant smile before addressing Lucian with a worried expression. "Mr. Farwell, your phone."
Lucian, already in a foul mood, bristled at the interruption. His expression hardened, and he was on the verge of reprimanding Cayden. He paused, however, realizing Cayden wouldn't disrupt a meeting unless it was important. Suppressing his anger, he gestured for Cayden to approach.
Cayden visibly relaxed, hurrying forward. He even opened a text message, displaying it on the screen before handing over the phone. As Lucian reached for it, Cayden subtly directed his gaze to the screen, prompting Lucian to look.
Lucian saw the name "Jarvis." His brow furrowed as he read the message: "Dr. Jarvis accidentally inhaled poisonous gas during an experiment. She is currently unconscious."
Cayden had hesitated before bringing the message. Knowing Lucian and Ms. Jarvis were estranged, and that he was engaged to Ms. Pearson, he'd been conflicted. But recalling Lucian's concern for Roxanne's well-being, he'd decided to intervene. He watched Lucian intently, fearing he'd made a mistake. He saw Lucian's expression darken further, the tension in the room intensifying.
"Today's meeting is adjourned," Lucian announced, rising abruptly. "I want each person in charge to submit a written report of the remaining items to Cayden."
He left without waiting for a response. Poisoned during an experiment? What is Roxanne doing? How could she not prioritize her safety after so many years of research? The directors exchanged bewildered glances. Lucian had always prioritized work, yet recently he'd abruptly ended several meetings for unknown reasons. While those meetings were inconsequential, his behavior was unsettling.
Cayden silently breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, it seems I didn't act unnecessarily. Mr. Farwell's reaction clearly indicates Ms. Jarvis' importance to him. I hope this incident improves their relationship.
