Chapter 1205
Jonathan reached the top floor. Lucian, having sent Estella back to her ward, waited outside Roxanne's.
"How is Dr. Jarvis? How was she poisoned so suddenly?"
Jonathan, having visited Roxanne's research institute, knew its personnel and equipment met safety standards. He found the poisoning inexplicable.
Facing a friend, Lucian relaxed slightly. "I'm not sure. She doesn't know either," he said wearily.
Seeing Lucian's frustration, Jonathan didn't press. "May I visit her?"
Lucian glanced at the ward, hesitated, then nodded. "I'm not sure if she's awake, but you can go in."
Roxanne, preoccupied by Lucian's earlier words, was awake when they entered. Unsure how to face him, she closed her eyes, feigning sleep.
"Dr. Jarvis?" Jonathan called softly.
Recognizing his voice, Roxanne hesitated before opening her eyes. "Mr. Queen?"
Jonathan breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank goodness! I thought you were asleep."
Roxanne chuckled nervously, avoiding Lucian's gaze. Lucian, however, saw through her pretense and remained silent.
"How are you feeling?" Jonathan asked with concern.
"I'm alright. Just tired," Roxanne replied with a grateful smile. "Sorry to worry you."
Jonathan frowned. "Nonsense! I didn't dare tell my grandfatherโI doubt his heart could take it. Consider this a visit on his behalf. I hurried here; no time for a gift basket."
Roxanne laughed.
"By the way, do you know how this happened?" Jonathan asked.
Roxanne shook her head, lowering her gaze. She suspected foul play, but the experiment was managed only by Jack, Colby, and herself. Jack, a Damaris family member and the experiment's lead, had no motive for sabotage. Colby, a long-time colleague and trustworthy friend, was also unlikely; he'd been the first to notice the problem.
Jonathan looked doubtful, sensing Roxanne knew more. However, he wouldn't pressure her.
After a moment's silence, he chuckled. "A mystery! Well, since it happened in your institute, you can handle it when you're better. For now, focus on recovering!"
Roxanne managed a smile.
"I'll leave you to rest," Jonathan said, waving goodbye.
Roxanne nodded, watching him go. Her gaze then fell on Lucian; she wondered if he'd prompted Jonathan's questions.
Lucian, also leaving, paused at her gaze. Roxanne quickly averted her eyes, pulling the blanket higher to hide her embarrassment.
