Chapter 1218

In a deep voice, Lucian said, "They're in the next room. Since you're awake, I'll let them see you before asking Cayden to bring them back."

Roxanne readily agreed, wanting to minimize the children's hospital stay. However, Lucian remained seated, and a long silence ensued. Scenes of his care and concern from the previous night flooded Roxanne's mind, her heart lurching. She'd anticipated he'd fetch the children, allowing her some time alone. His stillness left her unsure how to proceed.

"Put the needles away," Lucian said abruptly, his gaze fixed on the acupuncture needles beside her bed.

Roxanne froze. Lucian's gaze shifted to her face. "Those needles will scare the kids," he added calmly.

"They won't," Roxanne replied instinctively. "Archie and Benny are used to them." She explained that the boys sometimes even helped with disinfection and considered the needles no different from forks.

Lucian's gaze darkened. "But Essie will be scared. They were already frightened by how you looked yesterday."

Roxanne was startled, remembering Estella. Apologizing, she confessed, "I forgot."

Lucian frowned. "I didn't mean it that way. You don't need to apologize." He wanted to remind her of the children's fear from the previous day, fearing the needles would worsen it. He realized she'd misunderstood. A sharp pain pulsed at his temples. He was pragmatic, not eloquent, and struggled to explain himself.

After stowing the needles, Roxanne turned to Lucian. "All right, they're put away. You can get them now."

He stared at her, then silently headed next door. As the door closed, Roxanne sighed with relief, using the moment to gather her thoughts. She reluctantly acknowledged her dependence on Lucian during her agony the previous night. His unwavering support had ensured a restful sleep. She was sure he'd perceived her feelings, yet he remained, offering comfort and support.

Roxanne's resolve faltered. Earlier, while performing acupuncture, she'd considered clarifying things. But upon his awakening, she'd retreated, avoiding his gaze. Fear of misinterpreting things had driven her response. Last night's events made it clear she shouldn't again avoid Lucian and Estella, despite her gratitude.

The complexities of the future weighed heavily on her mind. A knock sounded. Before she could react, the three children burst in, rushing to her bedside, their eyes bright. Lucian followed, saying, "They couldn't stop worrying about you and woke up early."
