Chapter 1225
Hearing Roxanneโs apology, a flash of smugness crossed Colbyโs eyes, but his tone remained concerned. โAs long as you get better, it doesnโt matter how tired I get. I thoughtโฆ Forget it. Letโs not talk about this. Why did you call?โ
Uneasy, Roxanne said, โIโm afraid Iโll have to trouble you again.โ
Colby had been busy since her collapse yesterday. A recent investigation required his assistance to secure necessary permissions. Roxanne felt deeply sorry for the burden she placed on him.
Colby, working overtime at the research institute reviewing surveillance footage, momentarily froze at Roxanneโs words before regaining his composure. โWhat is it? Go on. Iโll try my best to help.โ
Roxanne smiled gratefully. โMr. Farwell and I want to investigate yesterdayโs incident. Weโll need permission to access the research institute, and therefore require your assistance.โ
Colby tensed, his throat tightening. He didnโt mind Roxanneโs investigation, but Lucianโs involvement was unexpected. He'd only asked Lucian to witness his fight with Jack, not to investigate him. Lucian's interference would be problematic; Colby doubted he could conceal the truth from Lucian's sharp eyes.
โDr. Galloway?โ Roxanne urged, confused by his silence.
Colby snapped back to attention, forcing a calm tone. โIโm sorry. I was up all night yesterday, so I spaced out. All right, I understand. Let me know when you need help.โ
Roxanne thanked him politely. โThank you, and please get some rest.โ
Absentmindedly, Colby agreed to help before hanging up after a few seconds. Lucian, having listened to their entire conversation, found Colbyโs response peculiar. However, Colby was insignificant enough to dismiss as merely sleep-deprived.
โIโve already contacted Dr. Galloway,โ Roxanneโs voice announced from the ward. โThis canโt be delayed. If someone planned this, delaying will give them more time to destroy evidence. Letโs begin the investigation immediately.โ
Lucian, already aware of this, replied, โI know. Iโll begin after youโve rested.โ
Roxanne frowned. โI want to participate. After all, this happened because of me. Iโm the victim; I canโt simply wait.โ She worried about Lucian investigating alone, fearing his prejudice against Jack might cloud his judgment.
Lucian, seeing through her, narrowed his eyes. โAre you worried Iโll fabricate evidence against Jack?โ
A flash of guilt crossed Roxanneโs eyes, quickly masked. โI just think it would be fairer.โ
Lucian sneered. โI understand, but your condition prevents that. The specialist advised rest. Donโt worry. I only want the real culprit, though I suspect Jack. Iโll deal with him later!โ
Their silence spoke volumes.
