Chapter 1272

Following Jack's words, Roxanne felt even greater guilt. "I'm sorry," she said, biting her lip. "I've been so busy investigating the incident that I forgot to contact you."

Fortunately, Jack didn't press the matter. He simply smiled, studying her to ensure she'd recovered.

"I've fully recovered now," Roxanne murmured. "Sorry for worrying you these past few days, Mr. Damaris."

"I'm glad to hear that," Jack replied casually. "I visited you at the hospital the night you collapsed, but Mr. Farwell said I'd disrupt your rest and wouldn't let me in."

Roxanne turned to Lucian. He met her gaze calmly. "I told you about it. It was late, and Mr. Damaris likely shared my concern."

Jack's expression shifted dramatically. He hadn't expected Lucian to mention his visit, nor Roxanne's lack of reproach. He studied her face, noting only contrition towards him, no hint of censure towards Lucian. Chagrined, he met Lucian's scrutinizing gaze, the tension between them escalating rapidly.

Sensing the animosity, Roxanne subtly tugged Lucian's shirt, urging him to restrain himself.

In truth, Jack had done nothing wrong; they had misunderstood him. "I was discharged the next morning, and Mr. Farwell told me about your visit. Thank you for the first aid at the institute, Mr. Damaris. I might not have recovered so quickly otherwise. I apologize for not contacting you sooner."

She looked at Jack with sincerity, subtly advocating for Lucian, hoping to ease the tension. Unfortunately, neither man seemed to notice. Lucian snorted disdainfully. Jack, however, looked at Lucian, then back at Roxanne with helplessness in his eyes. "It seems Mr. Farwell still misunderstands me."

Roxanne frowned, glancing at Lucian, wishing he would intervene. Jack was a crucial collaborator, someone she'd inevitably see daily. If she and Lucian were to become a couple, he needed to accept this professional relationship. She didn't want his jealousy to again disrupt her work.

Lucian merely offered Jack an indifferent look. Roxanne's headache intensified. She foresaw many future conflicts.

"I came to inquire about Dr. Galloway and your recovery," Jack said. "Now that's clear, I won't delay. I have work at Damaris Group."

Roxanne nodded, smiling. "See you, Mr. Damaris. I'll contact you in two days when I resume research."

Jack departed without further comment. Roxanne watched his car go, then turned to Lucian, exasperation clear on her face.
