Chapter 1423

Roxanne hadn't worn the necklace because it was impractical. She removed it upon arriving at the research institute, storing it in her jacket pocket. After a busy morning, Jack called during lunch, explaining a sudden issue and suggesting they meet in the evening instead. Roxanne readily agreed.

That evening, she found Jack waiting outside the institute. "I'm so sorry," he apologized. "Something came up at the company; I couldn't leave." Roxanne smiled, unconcerned. "Work's more important. Still going to the restaurant? You go ahead; I'll follow." She walked toward her car.

Jack watched her go, his expression darkening. He said nothing, simply entering his own vehicle. They both drove to the nearby restaurant, arriving within ten minutes. Jack had reserved a window table.

As Roxanne removed her jacket, the necklace slid out, landing at Jack's feet. He picked it up, glancing at it before looking at her. "This necklace doesn't seem like your style," he observed, his tone hinting at something more.

Roxanne was surprised. She wouldn't have chosen such an extravagant piece herself, but saw no need to explain its origin. She merely smiled, remaining silent. Jack, however, recognized the giver from her expression. A wry smile touched his lips as he handed it back. "It attracts too much attention," he said. "We like to keep a low profile in the medical field. No wonder you kept it in your pocket."

She stared at him, sensing an underlying implication. He smoothly changed the subject to their new drug. "Most of the herbs we're using are from the Damaris family. My grandfather hopes we'll use their raw materials as the main ingredient."

Roxanne's attention shifted immediately. She nodded. "That ensures better quality." A worry flickered. "But if our institute handles research and development, the supply of raw materialsโ€ฆ" She trailed off, fearing the Damaris family would demand exorbitant prices.

Jack replied calmly, "The institute will only handle research and development. We'll provide the herbs."

Relief washed over Roxanne. Their discussion flowed more easily thereafter. She acknowledged the Damaris family's advanced research in traditional medicine, finding many of their ideas aligned with her own. Their conversation broadened to encompass the entire traditional medicine market.

Before they realized it, it was late. Roxanne's phone rang; it was Benny, asking about her return. She apologized, explained the situation, said goodbye to Jack, and left.

He watched her go, his anger simmering silently. Lucian gave her that necklace! he thought. She's carrying it everywhere. What is she thinking?
