Chapter 1628: When Was She Poisoned?
โMr. Farwell, what happened to Dr. Jarvis?โ Linda approached the hospital bed, ignoring the tension surrounding Lucian. His gaze shifted to her, and recognizing Roxanneโs assistant, he controlled his temper.
โHave someone from the research institute treat her,โ he instructed.
Linda immediately directed several researchers to attend to Roxanne. Competent in medicine, they proceeded with increased caution after Lucian suggested poisoning. Roxanneโs pallor indicated a serious situation; delay was unacceptable. Everyone held Roxanne in high regard following the drug pricing incident and wanted to prevent any misfortune befalling her, especially given her contributions to the institute's success since her return.
They performed another pulse check, finding no conclusive abnormalities. However, Roxanne's pallor remained a significant concern.
โWeโre sorry, Mr. Farwell, but weโre unsure whatโs happening,โ a senior researcher apologized. โDr. Jarvisโ pulse is normal, but her complexion suggests otherwise.โ
Lucian gave him a cold look. โWould I have summoned you all if she were fine?โ he said, suppressing a harsh retort. He maintained a degree of decorum, recognizing their status as Roxanne's colleagues.
The researchers conferred in hushed tones before presenting their hypotheses. โWe canโt rule out poisoning, but we donโt know the cause. Her pulse is normal. Could it be sleeping pills?โ someone ventured cautiously.
Linda disagreed. โDr. Jarvisโ complexion wouldn't be so ashen if it were only sleeping pills.โ
โHer lips are purple. Perhaps a drug affecting her heart,โ another suggested.
Several experts countered, โWe've checked her heart; there are no problems.โ
Other suggestions followed: nerve anesthesia, blood-borne toxicity. The ensuing debate proved unproductive, yielding no diagnosis.
โMr. Farwell, when do you think Dr. Jarvis was poisoned?โ someone asked.
Silence fell. The timing was crucial. Lucian searched his memory; she had seemed fine earlier that day. Her only contacts had been Jonathan and institute personnel; no one had an obvious opportunity to poison her. When, then, had Jack acted?
โDr. Jarvis is a pharmacologist; how could she be unaware of being poisoned?โ The researchers were baffled.
Lucian's unease deepened. After a moment, he rubbed his forehead. โYou should know this better than me. Iโll give you a day. I donโt care what you do, but get her conscious again.โ
Everyone readily agreed, unwilling to object.
