Chapter 1668: Who Discovered This?
The veins in Lucian's arms bulged as he punched the wall, venting his frustration. There wasn't much he could do. He had to let her go, even if it meant she would hate him. He would do anything to save her life, even submit to Jack.
After an exhausting day in the ward, Madilyn emerged, surprised to find Lucian at the door. "Have you been standing here the whole time?"
Lucian nodded. "How is she?"
Madilyn sighed. "It's too early to tell. We've slightly softened her arteries and will continue tomorrow. You should go in and keep her company."
Lucian gazed at Roxanne, unable to move.
"Roxanne would want you by her side," Madilyn said gently.
Lucian's gaze softened. A moment's hesitation, then he entered.
After guarding Roxanne's bedside through the night, seeing no change in her condition, Lucian felt no relief from his anxiety. Peregrine's words weighed heavily on his heart. He knew a change was occurring within her, invisible to the naked eye.
At dawn, Madilyn and her team returned to their work. Lucian rose to leave, no longer lingering at the door. Peregrine hadn't returned, but Lucian had an appointment with Colby. He was anxious to see if Colby had any new ideas.
Lucian sped to the prison, arriving so hastily he'd forgotten to contact his friend. Fortunately, the guard from the previous day, just beginning his shift, recognized him.
"Are you here to see Colby Galloway again, Mr. Farwell?"
Lucian nodded impassively.
The guard efficiently arranged for Colby's release. The pair met again in the visiting room. Colby, still shackled and under guard, regarded Lucian with less hostility than before. They sat in silence.
As minutes ticked by, Lucian's heart sank. If Colby had an idea, he wouldn't hesitate to share it. The lack of any suggestion, the expression on his faceโฆ it was all discouraging. They remained silent.
Finally, Lucian nodded. "I understand. It's alright. I'll think of something else."
Just as he was leaving, Colby spoke, "Surely you've made some progress in the past two days. Any other clues? Tell me. Perhaps I could think of something."
Lucian paused, returning to his seat. He repeated Peregrine's diagnosis. "Her arteries have hardened, and the restricted circulation is causing further contraction."
Colby repeated the words, bewilderment in his eyes. Lucian nodded in confirmation.
After several minutes of silence, Colby looked up gravely. "Who discovered this?" He seemed unconvinced of the poison's severity.
"Mr. Peregrine Lomax. He's considered the King of Medicine in Merania. You may have heard of him."
Though unfamiliar with the medical world, Lucian knew of the old man's renowned prestige, witnessed in the experts' reverence for him.
