Chapter 1670: Nobody Was Good Enough For Her

Lucian's gaze dimmed as he recounted Roxanne and Peregrine's meeting. She would be overjoyed to learn of Old Mr. Lomax's treatment, but her safety was paramount.

"If there's no other way," he said expressionlessly, "I can only give Jack what he wants."

Colby was startled. "Jack gave you conditions? What are they?" There had to be a catch.

Lucian's grim gaze met his. "You need only know one: he wants me to marry another woman before Roxanne regains consciousness."

"Is he crazy? How could heโ€”"

Lucian offered a self-deprecating laugh. "My negligence caused Roxanne's predicament. I must pay the price."

It was a heavy price indeed. Colby stared, his expression shifting. Lucian would sacrifice his marriage for Roxanne's safety. He remembered first hearing Roxanne's story six years prior; he'd been disgusted with Lucian, deeming him unworthy. Even after Roxanne's return and their union, Colby clung to the belief that Lucian's sin was unforgivable, dismissing any hope of a future with her. Now, he saw Lucian as the only one truly worthy, the only one who loved her enough to give everything. His own feelings, and Jack's, were mere excuses to hurt her. His actions were unforgivable.

After a moment of self-recrimination, Colby looked up, disapproval etched on his face. "No, you can't let him win."

Lucian's brow furrowed.

"Jack's trying to drive a wedge between you," Colby said softly. "If you comply, he wins. You and Dr. Jarvis have endured years together; surely that counts for something? Hold on, for her sake. If she knew, I believe she'd fight to her death for you and the children." Pausing, Colby's features hardened with resolve. "You need more faith in her, and in us doctors. We'll find a solution."

Those were not the words Lucian expected. A complex mix of emotions flooded his eyes. "You'd see me with Roxanne?" he asked, incredulous.

He recalled Colby's relentless pursuit of Roxanne's attention, even maintaining his innocence after arrest. Yet, here he was, a changed man.

Colby's eyes flashed, then he looked away stiffly. "Before today, I always thought you unworthy of Dr. Jarvis. Nobody was good enough for her." He paused, a hint of self-awareness in his voice. "Even I am far from worthy." Turning back to Lucian, he added, "But I've seen your willingness to sacrifice for her. Dr. Jarvis likes you, and you treat her well. That's enough. She's better off with you than someone with impure motives."
