Chapter 1708: Not Answering the Phone

"I'll develop the antidote," Roxanne said resolutely. "But if we comply this time, he'll make excessive demands every time we need it. Are you sure you want to agree to his terms?"

Displeased, she added, "Didn't you say you trust me? I'm sure I can do it!"

Lucian knew Jack would make further demands, but he had no choice; he had to concede for Roxanne's sake. Seeing her determination, his confidence in her grew.

They gazed at each other for a long moment before Lucian compromised. "Okay, I understand. We'll do as you say. I'll annul the statement, and we can continue to work together."

A smile touched Roxanne's lips. After their decision, Lucian stood. Roxanne, thinking he was going to bed, made room for him.

With a deep gaze, Lucian said, "I appreciate the invitation, darling. But you've just recovered, and the bed is too small. I don't want you to feel cramped, so I'll take the couch."

Before Roxanne could reply, Lucian went to the couch. Roxanne blushed, belatedly realizing his endearment. Watching him lie down, she slowly lay down as well. Lucian switched off the light, plunging the ward into darkness. They remained silent, lost in their thoughts.

Early the next day, Jack checked social media for news about Farwell Group and the research institute. According to his agreement with Lucian, a statement announcing the contract termination should have been released by then. He waited an hour, but nothing appeared. His expression turned cold. "Lucian Farwell! How dare you?" he muttered, the thought of Roxanne's life in Jack's hands fueling his anger. "How dare you toy with me!"

His face dark, he instructed Kevin, "Call Lucian!" He needed to know what Lucian was thinking.

Frightened by Jack's grim demeanor, Kevin immediately called Lucian. Meanwhile, Lucian and Roxanne had been unable to sleep. They awoke as the sun rose, Roxanne pondering the antidote's composition, Lucian finally finding time to attend to Farwell Group's affairs.

A loud ring shattered their concentration. Lucian checked the caller ID, his face darkening, hesitation flickering in his eyes.

"Is it Jack?" he asked.

Roxanne, noticing the shift in his expression, knew immediately. Lucian frowned. Seeing this, Roxanne said softly, "I'll call him back. I have something to tell him."

Lucian hesitated, then declined the call. On the other end, Kevin was perplexed. "Mr. Damaris, Mr. Farwell isn't answering."

"That bastard!" Jack raged. "How dare he defy me! I'll make him pay!"

Kevin, witnessing Jack's fury, remained silent. The office atmosphere became instantly tense. Suddenly, Jack's phone rang. He checked the screen, furrowing his brows at the caller ID.
