Chapter 1710: Shocked
Lucian's expression froze as the phone call ended. He had much to say, but swallowed his words. Right now, all he wanted was for Roxanne to focus on developing the antidote. Everything else was secondary. At worst, he would beg Jack again.
Sensing his worry, Roxanne softly comforted him. "The blood test results should be out soon. I will find a way."
Lucian's face relaxed slightly. "I have faith in you."
Silence descended once more. Lucian knew Roxanne was engrossed in thought, so he remained quiet. Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door.
Startled from her reverie, Roxanne looked towards the door, assuming it was Madilyn. Lucian rose and opened it. He visibly relaxed upon seeing the visitor.
"Lucian, Old Mr. Lomax might have found something about Jack's poison!" Jonathan announced excitedly, then his expression turned grim. "How is Roxanne? Are we too late?"
He carefully studied Lucian's face before murmuring, "I don't think we're late, right? Otherwise, you wouldn't look like this."
Before Lucian could reply, Roxanne's voice called from inside, "Is that Jonathan? Why aren't you coming in?" She found it odd that he hadn't entered after she heard his voice.
Jonathan sighed in relief at her voice. "You're awake, Roxanne? Did you two find the antidote?" He looked at Lucian in disbelief.
Lucian nodded respectfully to Peregrine, who stood behind Jonathan, then ushered them into the ward.
Jonathan's joy was evident upon seeing Roxanne sitting up. "You're awake! We were so worried! I thoughtโฆ forget it. Everything's fine now. How are you feeling?"
Roxanne chuckled, "I'm sorry I worried you. I feel much better now." She looked curiously at the person behind Jonathan. "I heard you mention Old Mr. Lomax. Is heโฆ?"
The two men realized they hadn't introduced Peregrine. Jonathan stepped back slightly. "This is the King of Medicine of Merania, Peregrine Lomax, also known as Old Mr. Lomax. He came to treat you personally."
Roxanne reeled back in shock. "King of Medicine? I can't even find the antidote for that young man's poison! I've failed!"
Peregrine, weary from sleepless nights spent poring over medical texts and frustrated by his lack of progress, looked grim.
Lucian comforted him, "Please don't feel bad, Old Mr. Lomax. Jack said he learned the poison's formula from ancient Damaris family texts. It's understandable you couldn't find the antidote."
Peregrine frowned. "No wonder I couldn't find it!"
