Chapter 1728: Hang On For A While
Lucian fell silent for a few seconds, glancing at Benny and Estella before massaging his temple. "I'm panicking," he admitted. "I wonder how Roxanne is doing."
"Luckily, you're here," Jonathan said. Lucian, holding Benny and Estella, stood and thanked Jonathan again, though his tone lacked its usual courtesy. "I'm losing my composure, but thanks to your reminder, I've managed to calm myself."
Jonathan sighed in relief. "I've never seen you so anxious. Don't worry; Roxanne will be fine." Having known Lucian since childhood, Jonathan knew his friend's usual demeanor was cold and composed. He'd never seen Lucian display such raw emotion.
Jonathan glanced at the children in Lucian's arms, then thought of Roxanne lying in the hospital bed. Perhaps love truly could soften even the hardest heart.
"Look after them for a while. I need to make a call," Lucian said, handing the children to Jonathan.
Jonathan, carefully holding the sleeping children, worried about his grip. Too tight, and he'd wake them; too loose, and he might drop them. He ended up squatting down slowly.
He then shot Lucian a wary look. "Who are you calling? Jack? Roxanne won't like it if she finds out!" He'd overheard their earlier phone conversation and knew the potential consequences of Lucian seeking Jack.
Lucian shook his head calmly. "I'm calling the hospital to ask about Roxanne."
Jonathan stared dubiously for a few seconds before relaxing. "Go on, then. I'll watch the kids."
Lucian nodded and left. Outside, he called the hospital director.
Meanwhile, Zayne sat in the ward, closely watching Roxanne. Lucian's call startled him, nearly causing him to drop his phone. After regaining his composure, he answered, "Yes, Mr. Farwell?" Even though Roxanne was unconscious, he spoke softly, as if afraid of waking her.
"How's Roxanne?" Lucian asked, his voice deep.
Zayne, looking at Roxanne's furrowed brow and the monitors, grew nervous. "Mrs. Farwell seems stable for now," he replied. "Though her readings are improving slowly, she's hanging on. She should be able to hold on for a while longer."
Lucian was silent for several seconds. Zayne stared unblinkingly at the screens, fearing a sudden downturn.
Finally, Lucian said, "All right. Continue monitoring her." He hung up.
