Chapter 1747: I'm Sorry
"What is it?" Lucian asked, sensing Roxanne's unspoken need to confide. He waited patiently, allowing her time to gather her thoughts. His consideration only deepened her guilt, strengthening her resolve to come clean, though she struggled to know where to begin.
After a moment's contemplation, she met his gaze. "What do you think about Archie and Benny?"
"I adore them from the moment I saw them," Lucian replied seriously, his eyes fixed on hers. He suspected her intent, silently waiting for her confession, his heart brimming with anticipation.
Roxanne's gaze wavered under his earnest scrutiny. "That's greatโฆ" The weight of her long-held secret made articulating the truth agonizingly difficult. She felt it wasn't ideal timing, but she could no longer keep it from him, especially after recent events. She couldn't deprive the children of a complete family now that they had one. Their happy faces gave her the courage to finally admit, "Archie and Benny are actually your children, too. I'm sorry I hid this from you for so long."
She studied his expression, searching for any sign of anger, but he remained composed, patiently awaiting her explanation. Relieved by his calm demeanor, she continued, "I discovered I was pregnant after going abroad. Professor Lambert was a great help during the birth of my three children, but the baby girl died during labor. It broke my heart, and it took a long time to heal." She paused, glancing toward the door and smiling softly. "Unexpectedly, she's always been by your side."
The pain of Roxanne's past six years weighed heavily on Lucian.
"As for Archie and Benny," Roxanne continued, her voice low and tinged with regret, "I initially planned to stay overseas permanently and never return. I wanted to hide them from you because I feared you'd take them away." At that time, Archie and Benny were all she had.
"You were afraid I would take them from you," Lucian echoed, confirming her unspoken fear. Roxanne simply smiled, her lips slightly pursed in confirmation.
"I'm sorry you were separated from the boys for so long because of me," she apologized.
"No. You don't have to apologize; it's my fault. I was the one who hurt you and betrayed your trust six years ago. I promise I will earn your trust back, bit by bit. I'm glad they were able to stay by your side all those years in my stead."
Lucian believed everything had unfolded as it should, seeing Archie and Benny as the reason Roxanne had persevered and the key to their swift reconciliation.
Roxanne felt a weight lift from her chest, relieved by his lack of blame, yet a lingering uncertainty remained. "Don't you have anything to ask me? This is serious. Do you truly believe me, just like that?"
