Chapter 1752: Fleeing to Escape Punishment
“You!” Hector exploded, his vision blurring with rage. He nearly collapsed, and Kevin rushed forward to steady him.
“Old Mr. Damaris, everything I said is true! Mr. Damaris is unstoppable! Please take care of yourself; you're the Damaris Group's only hope!” the assistant said, gently patting Hector's chest.
Hector gasped for breath, his face paling. Kevin quickly administered a pill.
Once Hector recovered, he looked at the assistant with sorrow. “Is that so?”
The young man nodded.
“This is ridiculous,” Hector shook his head. “The Damaris family has a long history of virtuous deeds. How could one of us be so avaricious?” He apologized. “I misunderstood. But why didn’t you tell me sooner about his actions?”
Kevin sympathized with Hector’s distress. “Old Mr. Damaris, please don’t make this difficult for me. I’m only an assistant. How could I defy Mr. Damaris?”
Hector sighed, nodding. “Where is Jack? Tell him to come explain himself. How else can I face our ancestors?”
Kevin hesitated. “Mr. Damaris, he…”
Hector’s heart sank. “Where is he?”
“Mr. Damaris has likely already left Horington. He would have faced imprisonment otherwise,” the assistant replied anxiously.
Jack, after a fit of anger and anxiety the previous night, had sent his assistant to tell Hector he was the only one who could save the family. He himself had discharged himself from the hospital and fled abroad.
Learning of his grandson's escape, Hector’s anger flared again. “He left like that? He jeopardized the entire Damaris Group and ran away without a word? I was blind to choose him as heir!” He trembled with fury.
Repentance, a public apology, and confession might have salvaged the Damaris Group’s reputation. Instead, his grandson’s flight had ensured its ruin.
Hector’s heart ached contemplating the family's future. “Generations of our family dedicated themselves to pharmacology, even sacrificing our lives. Yet, he only cares about money! What’s wrong with this generation? Didn’t he consider the consequences of exposure?”
The assistant spoke resolutely, “Old Mr. Damaris, it’s all Farwell Group’s doing…” He hoped Hector would plead with Lucian for mercy.
Before he finished, Hector interrupted, “You reap what you sow! These scandals could have been avoided if Jack had followed established standards. Without Farwell Group's interference, he might have caused even greater problems!”
