Chapter 1755: So Wrong

The hand holding his suitcase trembled. Yet, as his gaze swept over Roxanne, Jack forced himself to remain composed. He couldn't lose; more importantly, he couldn't show cowardice before this woman.

"What do you want?" Steeling himself, Jack confronted the trio.

Lucian's icy voice echoed. "Initially, I planned to imprison you after marrying Roxanne. However, I didn't expect your impatience—your daring to poison her."

Lucian's gaze darkened. "Had you waited until our wedding, bankruptcy might have been the only consequence for Damaris Group. Now, that's insufficient punishment!"

Jack was taken aback. Lucian's investigation of Damaris Group had been remarkably swift and thorough because he'd already begun it, gathering evidence before last night. He'd likely planned this retaliation from the moment the poison affected Roxanne.

A chill ran down Jack's spine. His heart sank; it felt as though a giant snake constricted his chest, making breathing difficult. No! He couldn't admit defeat. He'd spent years building his medical empire; he couldn't give up now.

Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to calm down, his mind racing for a solution.

Jonathan's mocking voice cut through the tension. "What a pity. The Damaris family's century-old business, destroyed by your own hands. A hypocrite, driven by profit, with terrible medical skills."

Jack's expression darkened. He whipped his head toward Jonathan, his glare venomous. "What did you say? Questioning my skills? If they're so terrible, how did you fail to obtain results after days of research?"

Jonathan shrugged nonchalantly. "Compared to Roxanne, your skills pale—no, blanch—in comparison. You lack self-awareness. You tried to outmaneuver Lucian in business and overpower Roxanne in medicine. Mr. Damaris, snap out of your delusion. What's wrong with simply being the Damaris heir?"

"What do you know? If only…" Enraged, Jack lost control. Glaring at Roxanne, he spat, "If only Roxanne had joined me, we'd have built a grand medical empire! Her inability to recognize opportunity forced my hand! If she'd listened, obeyed, nothing would have happened to her; she'd be enjoying fame and fortune beside me!"

Silence followed. Even Jonathan's smirk faded. Roxanne's expression darkened. "I thought, Jack, you'd learned your lesson, felt some guilt. I never imagined you'd remain unrepentant—"

"Repent? Why should I? Your thinking is too rigid!" Jack's face was flushed. "Can't doctors strive for wealth? The Damaris family's history pales beside Farwell Group! It's unfair that Farwell Group overpowered us! I only wanted to rectify this situation! What's wrong with that?"
