Chapter 1762: Jail

Roxanne looked pale, and Lucian wasn't sure if it was lingering effects from the poison or simply a bad mood. Worried, he took her to lunch and then to the hospital for a thorough checkup. Knowing his concern, Roxanne readily agreed. Lucian was relieved when the tests showed she was mostly fine.

โ€œI know my own body. The poison is gone,โ€ Roxanne reassured him softly. โ€œIt's justโ€ฆ so much has happened lately. I'll be fine once things settle down.โ€

She felt wistful thinking about Jack's true nature and the Damaris Group's collapse. Lucian pulled her into a comforting embrace.

โ€œJack has only himself to blame for Damaris Group's downfall,โ€ he murmured. โ€œAnd the Damarises are responsible for overlooking his actions. Simply put, they caused their own ruin.โ€ His continued development of Damaris Group would have only worsened things. Had their scheme not been uncovered, a far more serious medical disaster would likely have followed. Perhaps this was the best outcome, sparing further victims.

Roxanne understood, yet a lingering sadness remained. If this was the true nature of a supposedly benevolent company, what about other medical groups? She questioned whether prioritizing her patients was the wrong approach.

Lucian, seemingly sensing her thoughts, leaned in. โ€œEvery professional has responsibilities,โ€ he whispered. โ€œDamaris Group, founded by doctors, should have prioritized saving lives. Even if they sought wealth, they shouldn't have resorted to evil. They misplaced their priorities. Doctors like you are rare. Peregrine clearly appreciates your commitment, which is why he remains at your research institute.โ€

He gently stroked her hair. โ€œWith me, you won't have to worry about money like Jack did. Focus on your medical career; I'll handle the finances.โ€

Roxanne smiled, touched by his unspoken plea for her to remain true to her principles. His reassurance eased her worries, and her grim expression softened.

A comfortable silence settled over them in the car, broken only by the ringing of Roxanne's phone. It was Madilyn.

โ€œWhat's up, Madilyn?โ€ Roxanne answered, smiling.

Madilyn's voice was brimming with excitement. โ€œI saw the news! Jackโ€™s been caught! I can't believe that petty man tried to hurt you! He deserves to stay in prison forever!โ€

Roxanne glanced at Lucian, recognizing his role in bringing Jack to justice.

โ€œBy the way, how are you feeling? Fully recovered?โ€ Madilyn asked with concern.

โ€œI just had a checkup. Mostly recovered.โ€

โ€œThat's fantastic!โ€ Madilynโ€™s excitement escalated. โ€œThis is double the celebration! Let's go outโ€”my treat. Bring Mr. Farwell and the kids.โ€
