Chapter 1772: Uncomfortable
Lucian, engrossed in Roxanne, seemed oblivious to anything unusual. He offered Roxanne a glass of water, saying, โYou must be thirsty after such a long conversation.โ She accepted with a smile.
Elektra felt overlooked. Lucianโs undivided attention remained fixed on Roxanne; he didnโt even inquire about her needs. She flagged a server, requesting, "Excuse me, I'm not enjoying the coffee. May I have a glass of lemon water instead?"
The dishes arrived, including Elektra's lemon water. She noticed Lucianโs complete disregard for her presence, despite her being a guest. The awkwardness intensified; she regretted accepting the lunch invitation. Why didn't I say no? Letting Roxanne treat me put me at a disadvantage.
To break the silence, Elektra asked, โLucian, Ms. Jarvis, why didn't you bring the children tonight?โ (She knew they were at school, but needed to initiate conversation.)
โTheyโre at school,โ Roxanne replied, spooning Lucianโs favorite dishes onto his plate. โWeโre planning to take them out tomorrow, since itโs the weekend.โ
Disturbed by their affectionate interactions, Elektra continued, โIโd love to meet your three children. I hear theyโre quite handsome. Is that true?โ
Lucianโs interest piqued. โYes, they are. After all, Roxanne and I are their parents. Good genes.โ
Elektraโs heart sank, but she maintained a brave face. โWow, I really must see for myself. I wonder what kind of gifts I should bring?โ
โThereโs no need, Ms. Lane,โ Roxanne replied. โThey have everything. You must be very busy having just returned. Don't bother with gifts. Iโll introduce you another time.โ
Roxanne observed Elektraโs gaze at Lucian throughout the meal, sensing something amissโa hidden admiration.
Time crawled for Elektra. After a few hasty bites, she declared herself full. โThank you for the meal, Ms. Jarvis. I'm rather busy having just returned. I need to meet some old friends later, so shall we call it a day?โ She wanted to leave immediately.
Roxanne agreed. As Elektra prepared to depart the private room, she expected Lucian to see her out, given his reputation for etiquette. Instead, he ignored her, attending to Roxanne. โI recall this is your favorite,โ he said, spooning food onto Roxanneโs plate. โTry it. Itโs more authentic here.โ
Elektra left, feeling deeply uncomfortable. Roxanne watched her go, narrowing her eyes.
Her experiences with Aubree and Jack's near-death incident had profoundly altered Roxanne. Previously consumed by fear, sheโd avoided Lucianโs advances, uncertain of his and the Farwellsโ intentions regarding Archie and Benny. Sheโd suppressed her feelings, trying to let go. But only she knew the depth of her love. Now, with everything back on track and her children with both parents, she wouldnโt let anyone ruin her happiness.
