Roxanne always turned on the TV in the mornings to listen to the news during breakfast with the kids.

“The Farwell Group and Pearson Group’s marriage of convenience, a six-year saga, has finally reached its engagement stage,” the male newscaster reported.

Roxanne’s hand paused. She was silent for a few moments before continuing nonchalantly.

Estella hung her head, fiddling with her fingers. “I want Ms. Jarvis to be my mommy, but I don’t think she likes Daddy. Daddy’s a bad guy. How could he marry that bad lady?”

The three children sulked through breakfast, leaving Roxanne exasperated.

After breakfast, instead of playing Legos, the children trudged upstairs together. Roxanne knew the news had upset them, but she couldn’t understand why. Her own thoughts were a tangled mess; she wasn’t in the mood to decipher theirs.
