Chapter 1912: Not a Chance

Grant nodded, opening the door wider. Roxanne and Lucian entered to find two sets of formal clothes neatly arranged on the couchโ€”clearly prepared by Grant and Winnie for the following day.

"Where are the children? Oh, I'm such a terrible grandfather!" Grant exclaimed, his attentiveness suddenly heightened. He hurriedly poured drinks and carefully carried the glasses over before disappearing into another room.

Winnie eyed Roxanne enviously, admiring her self-assured demeanor. "If we're talking family connections," she mused, "my daughter, Yuliana, is far superior. She has plenty of wealthy friends. I just don't understand why she's still a lowly tour guide and remains single. Yosef, on the other hand, dated a well-to-do woman before, but their relationship didn't work out." Her jealousy intensified, though she maintained a pleasant smile.

Soon, Grant returned with several sets of children's clothing. "I feel bad that I can't afford more expensive clothes, but I hope you'll accept these gifts for the children!" he said, stopping before Roxanne.

Roxanne, however, furrowed her brows and refused the offer. Lucian's expression turned cool. "These look a bit too small," he observed. "Children grow fast; I don't think they'll fit."

Grant stood awkwardly, unsure what to do. Winnie stepped in, chiding, "I told you! Kids grow quickly. You refused to listen when I told you to get a larger size. It's alright. We can return these and get a larger size." She took the clothes away.

"Roxanne," Grant began, his voice heavy with shame, "I came back in a hurry, so I don't have much money on hand. I also don't know how to provide you with a dowry. I'm really a failure of a father."

Winnie added, her voice choked with tears, "Roxanne, your father owed a significant amount of money after his factory went bankrupt. These past few years have been incredibly difficult, forcing us into hiding. Your siblings aren't doing well either. Perhaps it's our fate."

The atmosphere grew thick. Anyone else might have been swayed by Grant and Winnie's display of remorse, but Roxanne remained resolute. She glanced at Lucian, signaling him to ignore them, then replied coldly, "I never enjoyed the fruits of the factory's success. Didn't the business fail because of your pride?"

Roxanne had no intention of letting them off easily; she knew their personalities better than anyone.

Grant and Winnie's facade crumbled. Grant trembled slightly, his frown deepening. "Roxanne," he said harshly, "you're about to be married. As your father, I rushed here to attend your wedding. You don't have to behave so repulsively. If you think I'm an eyesore, I'll leave immediately."

Winnie tugged at his shirt, her voice frantic. "Grant, how can you say that? Oh, why are you so stubborn? Roxanne's right. We were too proud. We fell into debt because of our vanity. Roxanne, please don't be mad. Your father and I will leave immediately after your wedding ceremony! We won't cause you any trouble!"
