Chapter 1996: Keep Your Wits About You
It was late, and though Madilyn was impatient, she couldn't disturb a pregnant woman's rest. She decided to wait until tomorrow.
As darkness deepened and the chill intensified, Jonathan quickly removed his coat and draped it over Madilyn. “Do you feel cold? Should I take you home now?” he whispered.
He only then noticed Madilyn dozing. He smiled faintly and shifted his posture. “Let me carry you,” he said. Without waiting for her reply, he scooped her up and headed toward the car.
Madilyn was exhausted. Carried into the car, drowsy, she felt warmth from a seemingly materialized blanket. In her groggy state, she sensed Jonathan tidying around her; a wave of security washed over her, and she fell asleep.
After some time, Jonathan softly called, “Maddy, Maddy. We’re home.”
Madilyn awoke, slightly lightheaded. But hearing his affectionate term, she sobered instantly and grinned. I'm officially Jonathan's girlfriend now.
“Why did you bring me home?” she asked, suddenly reluctant to leave him.
“Well, it wouldn’t be appropriate to go straight to a hotel, right?” A hint of passion gleamed in Jonathan’s eyes, making Madilyn blush.
No way. That would be inappropriate.
She found a way to rephrase. Pouting, she said, “I meant, I’m hungry.”
“All right. Let’s have supper, then,” Jonathan replied decisively, starting the car and turning around.
Madilyn climbed from the back to the front passenger seat, giggling. “From today onward, this car’s passenger seat is exclusively mine.”
“No problem. From now on, this car will only pick you up. Oh, and Madam Xander as well,” Jonathan’s deep, magnetic voice resonated pleasantly.
Joy surged anew in Madilyn’s heart.
Early the next day, Roxanne received a call from her best friend. Hearing about Jonathan’s confession, Roxanne found it incredible but was genuinely happy for them.
Later, Madilyn hesitated before mentioning the purple wishing bottle. “Jonathan and I are curious. You can casually ask him. It’s been over a decade, and Lucian was so charming, he must have captivated many girls. This isn’t surprising! I hope this doesn’t cause conflict between you two. Ah! I shouldn’t have said anything. I always meddle! Don’t let this cause discord between you and Lucian after all you’ve been through.”
Regret gnawed at Madilyn. Some things should remain secret. So many years had passed; perhaps Lucian had forgotten.
Unexpectedly, Roxanne burst into laughter.
“Roxanne, why are you laughing? Be serious! I don’t want Elektra’s incident repeated. Lucian is too outstanding; you must always keep your wits about you,” Madilyn warned sternly.
Roxanne continued giggling until Madilyn’s reprimand silenced her.
Then, Roxanne replied casually, “About that… will you believe me if I tell you that purple wishing bottle belonged to me?”
