Chapter 2006: Forgive Him When He Is Dead
Grant lost consciousness again, his voice trailing off. Lucian immediately ordered his bodyguards to return Grant to the manor. He squeezed Roxanne's hand, noticing its chill, a testament to her anxiety. "Roxanne, just do your best, and leave the rest to fate," he reassured her.
Roxanne nodded and hurried back inside. Setting aside their past animosity, Grant was now simply a dying patient needing her expertise. As a doctor, she had to try. Without hesitation, she began preparing for his acupuncture treatment. Simultaneously, Jonathan and Madilyn were summoned to prepare the medicine as instructed. Since charcoal was needed for boiling, this was done outside. Madilyn monitored the temperature while Jonathan added water.
"I guess this is karma, huh? He doesn't deserve to be Roxanne's father. He's lucky she's so kind," Madilyn exclaimed indignantly. "Someone else would have ignored him!"
Jonathan nodded, sighing. "I guess he won't live long. Roxanne's doing all she can, but ultimately, it's up to fate."
Madilyn continued, "His own children don't even care, and his mistress is too busy with her luxurious life to visit. He's blind to who's truly kind to him." She would never forgive him. She understood Roxanne's feelings; she, too, had a horrible father.
In the third-floor guest room, Grant regained consciousness after Roxanne's treatment. The help brought him his medicine. Roxanne returned to the living room, looking exhausted. Lucian gently massaged her shoulders, aware of the strain of maintaining her posture during the acupuncture. Jonathan and Madilyn entered and sat silently.
"The cancer has metastasized," Roxanne explained calmly. "Without intervention, he'd likely die within days. With continued treatment, he might live for at least two weeks."
Madilyn, despite their shared profession, was awestruck by Roxanne's skill. Such an advanced case of stomach cancer usually meant imminent death, yet Roxanne could pinpoint a timeframe, demonstrating complete control of the situation.
"Roxanne, don't mind my nosiness," Madilyn finally blurted out. "Can you really forgive Grant?"
Roxanne wasn't sure. A bitter smile touched her lips. "I guess so. He only has a fortnight. When the time comes, I'll find a way to forgive him." The truth was, she felt death was too easy. He deserved to experience the torment he'd inflicted on others. It was every man for himself in times of trouble, and Grant, abandoned by his wife and children, was experiencing the consequences of his actions. "What goes around comes around," she thought.
A tense silence hung in the air until Elias and Sonya arrived. Hearing their son's explanation, they exchanged a look of approval.
"He's still our in-law," Elias announced. "We should visit him." He went upstairs, Sonya following.
Roxanne suddenly recalled something. "Let the children say goodbye," she told Lucian. "He won't be staying here long. We should arrange his transfer to the Jarvis residence; I think he'd prefer to spend his remaining days there."
