Chapter 2013: Sincerity

The next morning, a line of luxury cars graced the Sheffield family mansion's courtyard. Inside, Norton received the Cheever familyโ€”father and son. Jensen Cheever, beaming, chatted animatedly with Norton; his son, Wilmer, a handsome young man with an air of elegance, sat quietly beside them.

"Mr. Cheever, Madilyn should return in a day or two," Norton chirped. "We'll arrange a meeting with Mr. Wilmer then, to allow the young people to become acquainted."

Jensen nodded. "I hear Ms. Madilyn is already a hospital director. Remarkable for such a young woman. I fear my son may be inadequate." He chuckled.

"Nonsense, Mr. Cheever!" Norton exclaimed. "Mr. Wilmer is exceptionally talented, securing two major projects for the Cheever Group at such a young age. He's outstanding, even nationally!"

After pleasantries, Norton saw the Cheevers off. Once alone, he ascended to the guest room where Mildred was still attempting to persuade Lorraine.

"Let bygones be bygones," Mildred pleaded. "We're older now. I know you've harbored resentment, but consider your daughter's future."

Mildred glared at Norton upon his entrance. Lorraine remained impassive, stubbornly silent. Yet, to secure the advantageous marriage, Lorraine had to attend the ceremony; Jensen and Wilmer had promised to respect Madilyn and her mother's wishes.

Norton gestured for Mildred to leave, wanting to speak with Lorraine alone. Mildred, her expression darkening, glared fiercely at Lorraine's back before departing.

"Norton," Lorraine said, turning from the window, "there's no point. You can't dictate Madilyn's marriage. You've neglected her, failing to provide even basic support. Have you no shame?"

"Lorraine, I understand I've wronged you," Norton began, but Lorraine interrupted.

"Enough. You've been perfectly content. I've seen through your deceit. There's no love in your eyes, only self-interest."

Norton's expression hardened. He furrowed his brow in anger.

"Let's discuss practicalities," Norton said. "Secure Madilyn's agreement to marry the Cheever heir, and I'll compensate you and your daughter with properties and a company. You'll gain a foothold in Xandenia. This proves my sincerity. Madilyn will always work for others in Horington!"

A bitter smile touched Lorraine's lips. She looked at him as if a stranger. Any lingering hope and affection shattered in that instant.
