Chapter 2022: He Is Done For
Meanwhile, at the Sheffield residence, Wilmer's Porsche arrived. Stepping out, he composed himself before entering the living room. He had seen a photograph of Madilyn and, since that first glimpse, had been captivated by her exquisite beauty. Even knowing this marriage was a strategic arrangement by Norton to save Southern Star Group, Wilmer was prepared to proceed with the proposal, having even persuaded his father, Jensen, to agree. He considered it a reasonable exchangeโa little money for such a desirable woman.
However, he was met with Norton's dejection and Mildred's hostile glare.
"Mr. Sheffield, hasn't Madilyn returned?" Wilmer frowned, clearly displeased.
Norton looked up, speechless. Before he could explain, blaming Madilyn's disobedience, Mildred erupted. "Mr. Wilmer, you're far too good for Madilyn! She's had a boyfriend, and she's pregnant! Her father just had a terrible argument with her," Mildred sighed, exasperated. "I can't believe this!"
Wilmer stared, dumbfounded, then disgust filled his eyes. He had expected a virtuous woman.
"Fine! In that case, this is over. Goodbye, Mr. Sheffield!" Wilmer, burning with anger, turned and left.
Norton's lips trembled. He knew that portraying Madilyn negatively would quickly end the deal with the Cheevers. Mildred's outburst was more effective than his planned explanations, which risked alienating the family. He turned to Mildred, crestfallen. "Darling, can your family lend us money? We need one hundred million to secure the overseas mineral resources. We can then develop the area and weather this crisis."
Mildred shrieked. "Norton, where would my family have that money? We've already given you everything, and it resulted in a significant loss! You should ask the Queen family, since your daughter's entangled with them! See if they can help!"
Norton was speechless, glaring at Mildred as one might at a fool. He remembered Mildred and her daughters bullying Lorraine and Madilyn, even kidnapping Madilyn to Xandenia. How could they expect help from his prospective son-in-law, Jonathan? They should be grateful he hadn't sought revenge.
Just then, his phone rangโthe board of directors' secretary. "Mr. Sheffield, terrible news! Our shares are plummeting! The board wants you to come immediately!"
Norton froze. His worst fears were realized. Mildred continued her relentless nagging, until Norton exploded. "Shut the hell up!"
Startled, Mildred roared, "Why are you yelling at me?"
Ignoring her, Norton prepared to leave for the office. But before he could, a convoy of cars arrived. He recognized several people: a bank manager from whom Southern Star Group had a five-hundred-million loan overdue, a furious private funds manager, and numerous contractors, all hostile and demanding payment.
"Mr. Sheffield, we've reached our limit. You should be able to settle a small debt."
"Mr. Sheffield, the upper management is acting. I'll lose my job if the accounts aren't settled. Please pay the five hundred million you owe."
"Norton Sheffield, Southern Star Group is finished! What are we going to do?"
That day, creditors stormed Norton's mansion. Terrified, Mildred locked herself in her room.
