Chapter 2061

Lucian was stressed by Roxanne's emotional volatility over the past few days. She cycled between anger, distress, and fleeting moments of relief, a pattern that deeply worried him. He feared she wouldn't endure it much longer. Therefore, he left her at home and went to the police station to expedite the investigation.

Fortunately, an arrest warrant had been issued, and four officers were dispatched to apprehend Winnie at her suburban villa. Since Winnie was only a suspect and obligated to cooperate, they could detain her for only twenty-four hours.

At the station, Winnie remained unafraid and arrogant. Spotting Lucian but not Roxanne, she smirked coldly. "You can't charge me without evidence. Investigate all you want; it doesn't matter to me."

Even the officers were angered by her demeanor and escorted her to the interrogation room. Lucian waited outside. When Detective Bill emerged, he shook his head, his expression grave. "Forensic reports indicate Ms. Jarvis's mother suffered from mercury poisoning for three years. Winnie forced Grant to divorce Ms. Jarvis's mother and entered the Jarvis family a year after the illness beganโ€”a one-year interval between those events."

Lucian's face darkened. "Perhaps Winnie targeted my mother-in-law from the start and poisoned her early on?"

Bill shook his head. "Ms. Jarvis described her mother's routine yesterday. She was always home, and would have noticed any suspicious behavior from a stranger. I considered Grant's involvement, but if so, he would have shown remorse before his death."

Lucian agreed. Grant had indeed been remorseful. Yet, his suicide remained puzzling. Was he helping Winnie conceal the truth? The case grew increasingly complex. Winnie's arrogance and fearlessness were baffling. Was it simply a matter of insufficient evidence?

Bill muttered, "Try prompting Ms. Jarvis to recall more details. See if her mother exhibited unusual behavior then."

Lucian nodded. "Mr. Chapman, I'll speak with Roxanne again. Please rest; thank you for your help."

"Don't worry, I'll observe their interrogation. Who knows, I might find something," Bill said, waving before returning to the station.

Back at the Farwell Residence, Lucian found his wife anxiously waiting. Roxanne was trying to relax, to sleep, but her mother's suffering relentlessly haunted her.

"How did it go? Any clues?" she asked upon seeing him.

Lucian carefully chose his words, wanting to avoid upsetting her further. He smiled. "Winnie's arrested and being interrogated. Mr. Chapman's experienced; he often breaks through criminals' defenses. We'll see how tough Winnie really is."
