"Mr. Farwell, can I help you?" Roxanne stopped and turned, regarding Lucian as a stranger.

Lucian frowned at her distant gaze—the same distant gaze he remembered from their divorce, the gaze that had driven him to desperate measures. He’d feared she would vanish from his life if he didn't regain her attention.

Roxanne tugged her wrist free, frowning. "If you're finished, please let go. I need to get to work."

Their striking appearance immediately drew attention. They were attractive, and the kindergarten parents weren't ordinary; many recognized Lucian and turned to stare. Roxanne feared the scandal of their continued proximity. Further public sightings would cause significant trouble.

Lucian finally reacted to her struggle. Easing his grip, he said, his expression complicated, "After speaking with Estella yesterday, I realized her rapid recovery was largely due to your efforts. I owe you my gratitude." (Remove the website plug)

This was partly an excuse to detain Roxanne, but also a heartfelt sentiment following his experiences the previous day. He'd initially seen Roxanne as mere childcare, not anticipating her profound impact on Estella's recovery. It must have taken immense effort to coax Estella to speak again.

Roxanne replied flatly, "That's all right. You've helped me recently, too. Besides, we don't owe each other anything."

She nodded, passed him, and entered her car.

"Consider this an attempt to get on your good side," Lucian said softly.

Roxanne paused, uncertain. Looking at her, Lucian pursed his lips. "You said the children shouldn't be involved in our issues. But does that only apply to Archie and Benny?"

Roxanne turned, meeting his gaze. "What do you mean?"

Lucian raised an eyebrow. "Estella likes you and is saddened by your absence. Yet you've repeatedly refused to see her, potentially worsening her condition. Isn't she innocent? I don't mind your avoiding me, but not her."

Roxanne was startled. She'd considered Estella's feelings but dismissed them; she didn't see herself as important, and Lucian would certainly care for Estella. Besides, he picked her up and dropped her off daily; avoiding them was difficult.

"Estella misses you. While our relationship is strained, I can offer a meal—to thank you for caring for Estella, and to encourage more visits." Lucian's tone was polite but firm, leaving no room for debate.

Though guilty toward Estella, Roxanne frowned at his concluding statement. "You're too used to business dealings. Not every problem is solved with a meal. I'm leaving for work."
