Chapter 245: Leaving the Country After Divorce
On the way back, Cayden cautiously glanced at Lucian through the rearview mirror. Lucian sat in the front passenger seat, his brow furrowed throughout the ride. The tension in the car was palpable. Cayden, Lucian's longtime subordinate, had never seen his employer so troubled.
He was unsure of Lucian's feelings for Roxanne. Could Lucian have feelings for Ms. Jarvis? But Mr. Farwell is engaged to Ms. Pearson, a fact he's never publicly denied. On the other hand, if he doesn't like Roxanneโฆ
Since Roxanne's return, Cayden had noticed a change in Lucian. His treatment of Ms. Pearson differed drastically from his treatment of Roxanne. He readily fulfilled Aubree's every request, yet seemed emotionally detached. With Roxanne, however, he exhibited mood swings, once even flying into a rage over her close interaction with another man. His protectiveness and possessiveness toward Roxanne were also evident. If this wasn't love, was it simply his refusal to accept her departure six years prior? Cayden's confusion deepened with each passing moment.
Meanwhile, in the backseat of Larry's car, Roxanne sat lost in thought, recalling Lucian's gloomy expression. Mixed feelings welled up inside her, and she remained silent.
After two days with Lucian and Roxanne, Larry suspected something was amiss. Noticing Lucian's earlier expression, he asked, "What's going on between you and Mr. Farwell?"
Roxanne, still lost in thought, was startled. Seeing her bewildered expression, Larry explained, "I've noticed Mr. Farwell treats you very differentlyโbetter than Aubree." He cited Lucian leaving Aubree behind at Alfred's birthday banquet to take Roxanne's hand, Aubree's subsequent darkened expression, and Lucian's immediate call to Aubree after Roxanne almost fell that morning. "If all that doesn't confirm Roxanne is special to Lucianโฆ and the grimness on his face when I took you away just nowโฆ it all speaks volumes."
"Larry, what do you mean?" Roxanne feigned ignorance, though she understood his implication. She expected him to drop it, but he pressed on.
"What do you think Mr. Farwell feels for you?" Her heart pounded. Her pupils contracting, she replied self-deprecatingly, "I don't know. Initially, I thought he'd hate me because of six years ago, but his recent actions have confused me."
Larry spoke gravely, "Have you considered that he might like you?"
Roxanne stared at him in shock. Larry continued solemnly, "Don't jump to conclusions without evidence," Roxanne said, averting her gaze nervously. "Whatever his feelings, we're just acquaintances. Nothing more. Besides, he's about to be engaged to Aubree." She had considered Lucian's feelings, but never the possibility of romantic interest. It didn't feel right; she remembered how much Lucian had cared for Aubree six years ago. This was not how Lucian behaved when truly in love.
Seeing her denial, Larry frowned and fell silent.
