Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief after the doctor confirmed Estella was fine. However, Lucian remained worried and admitted the little girl to the hospital for observation.
As it grew late, Roxanne said, "Since Essie's all right, I'll take the kids home to rest. Call me if you need anything." She started to leave, but Lucian grabbed her wrist.
"Please examine her, too," he said to the doctor.
Roxanne immediately protested. "That's not necessary. I'm fine. I just want to go home."
Lucian wouldn't let go. Roxanne sighed, walked to the doctor, and rolled up her sleeve, revealing an abrasion on her wristโa scrape from earlier, when she'd pulled Estella back. She hadn't wanted the children to worry, and had planned to treat it herself later.
Lucian's expression darkened. Archie and Benny cried out, "Mommy, you're hurt!"
Roxanne smiled reassuringly. "It's just a scrape. I'm okay."
After a brief examination, they left the emergency ward. Cayden handled Estella's admission paperwork. Roxanne, still concerned, went to the ward with Lucian.
Estella woke as soon as she was settled in bed. Archie and Benny, noticing first, rushed over, exclaiming, "You're awake! Are you okay? Do you feel unwell?"
Groggy, Estella blinked, shook her head, and looked at the boys. They sensed something was wrong but, overjoyed she was awake, continued talking. [Remove the website advertisement]
Roxanne watched for a moment, then caressed Estella's face. Estella smiled and touched the bandage on Roxanne's wrist. Seeing Estella's worried look, Roxanne said, "It's just a little scrape. It doesn't hurt." Then, she asked, "Essie, are you hungry? What would you like to eat?"
Estella shook her head.
Roxanne and Lucian exchanged worried glances. They realized Estella hadn't spoken since waking. The incident had clearly affected her.
"It's late. You should go home," Lucian said.
Roxanne hesitated. She'd planned to leave earlier, but now found it difficult. Estella, hearing this, grabbed Roxanne's shirt.
"I'll stay with you," Roxanne said, taking Estella's hand. Turning to Lucian, she added, "I'll stay and keep Essie company. She must be hungry. Could you have someone bring us some food?"
Lucian agreed and instructed Cayden to get food for everyone.
