Although Gerald focused on academics, the others present were involved in the medical industry, many relying on Gerald's expertise for their livelihoods. Gerald's words, while seeming like a simple apology to Roxanne, subtly pressured the others.
Roxanne understood the implication, returning his gaze with gratitude. The others quickly agreed; Gerald's strategy had worked.
"I've heard Mr. Queen speak of Dr. Jarvis' impressive skills," one commented. "And now, we've seen Mr. Lynch's admiration. There's no reason to hesitate."
"I never imagined Dr. Jarvis would be so young, and a woman! She even runs her own research instituteโsuch a strong woman!"
Praise flowed toward her. Roxanne knew it stemmed from their deference to Jonathan and Gerald, but nonetheless, the collaboration was secured. She patiently thanked them for their kind words.
As the banquet organizer, Jasper couldn't remain. Before leaving, he asked Roxanne, "Would you care to join me, Dr. Jarvis? I can introduce you to individuals within Summerbank's medical community."
Roxanne accepted, excused herself from Gerald, and returned to the banquet hall with Jasper. Larry stayed behind with Gerald.
Jasper's influence in Summerbank's medical industry was evident. Upon his arrival, many approached to greet him. He returned their greetings and introduced Roxanne.
After some time, Roxanne felt tired and excused herself to rest. Jasper readily agreed, leading her to a couch before rejoining the crowd.
Settling down, Roxanne instinctively scanned the room. She didn't see Lucian. Only upon retracting her gaze did she realize her action, a strange feeling rising within her. She couldn't explain why she'd subconsciously searched for him.
Maybe I'm just worried he'll look for me again, she reasoned, despite her conflicting feelings.
Suddenly, a shadow fell before her. Roxanne tensed, fearing her apprehension had been realized. Panic flickered across her face as she looked up.
Seeing who stood before her, she calmed, speaking slowly. "Who are you?"
A tall, broad man stood there, his size seemingly engulfing her. Noticing her gaze, he smiled, raised his glass, and introduced himself. "Hello. I'm Joseph Cadman, the youngest son of the Cadman family. May I have the pleasure of your acquaintance?"
The Cadmans were a respected family in Summerbank, so Joseph offered little further explanation. He simply stared confidently after his request.
He'd arrived late. By the time he saw Roxanne, Jasper was introducing her to guests. He overheard some conversations; Roxanne's beauty and skills intrigued him. Seeing her alone, he approached eagerly.
However, Roxanne was unfamiliar with Summerbank's influential figures and had frightened herself with her own assumptions. She was in no mood for socializing. She offered a polite but distant smile. "I'm sorry," she said. "I'm here for business and will be leaving soon. I doubt I'll have time to make acquaintances."
