"It seems the children are quite fond of you, Roxanne," Jack remarked.
Larry joined them, carrying a plate of food, and sat across from Roxanne. She greeted him with a nod.
After smiling at Jack, she playfully teased Larry, "I have more experience with children than you. Besides, I always keep sweets on handโthey're surprisingly effective at coaxing cooperation."
Roxanne knew the sweets were essential; without them, the children wouldn't have cooperated, regardless of their affection for her.
Jack agreed, "It's a clever trick. We could try it during our medical consultations next time."
Roxanne's smile faded, her lips pressing into a thin line. "It's just something I learned from experienceโraising my own children requires it."
Jack, more concerned about her demeanor than the sweets, changed the subject. "More children will be arriving this afternoon. Would you like a break, Dr. Jarvis? You must be exhausted."
Roxanne shook her head, her answer firm. "I can manage. I've handled tougher situations overseas. These children need me; I can't abandon them."
She'd come hoping to gain the Damaris family's trust and secure their collaboration. But seeing the children's fragility, those initial goals had faded. Now, she was solely focused on providing the best possible care.
These children reminded her of Archie and Benny, and the daughter she'd lost. Compared to their plight, her fatigue was insignificant.
Jack was astounded by her dedication. Even for a man, the constant medical consultations were an immense burden; he couldn't imagine the intensity of her work overseas.
Out of curiosity, Jack glanced at Larry.
Larry nodded. "You heard her. That woman is a fighter."
Roxanne grinned but remained silent.
During their conversation, Daniel approached and sat beside Roxanne. She instantly recalled his earlier treatment of her, wondering if he'd come to reprimand her again.
The other doctors watched, some even bringing their plates closer, anticipating a confrontation.
Larry, as if shielding Roxanne, addressed Daniel, "Is there anything I can assist you with, Dr. Hopp?"
Daniel frowned at Larry's guarded tone. He looked at Roxanne and asked stiffly, "Why did you help me just now?"
Roxanne was taken aback.
"Why did you help me persuade the children, even though I've been criticizing your methods?" he pressed.
Roxanne replied with a casual smile, "Because I believe you're not only a respected expert in traditional medicine but also an ethical doctor. You've been critical, but I know you wouldn't take it out on the children. I'm sure you only want the best for them."
