"Close your eyes," Lucian instructed.
Roxanne's eyelids fluttered before she obeyed. She felt his warm breath near her again, and nervousness tightened her grip on her palms. The children watched as Lucian leaned closer. Just as his lips were about to touch hers, he paused, tilting his head slightly, creating the illusion of a kiss.
Roxanne was aware of his hesitation and withdrawal. She held her breath, waiting, but he remained. The silence was so profound she could hear his breathing. Frowning, she cautiously opened her eyes, meeting his gaze. His handsome face momentarily held her captive.
Recovering, she pressed her palm against his chest. "A simple kiss will do. Don't forget to straighten up afterward; Sleeping Beauty is supposed to wake up."
Lucian's eyes darkened as he scrutinized her. He slowly straightened, offering a wry smirk. "Thanks for the reminder, Ms. Jarvis."
Roxanne lowered her gaze and rose. "Let's call it a day. That should be the ending scene for the play." She left him alone on the couch and went to the children.
Lucian was pleased with the progress, unconcerned by Roxanne's renewed distance.
He rose, approached Estella, and said in a deep voice, "I'll see you tomorrow then." Lowering his eyes, he added, "Essie, say goodbye to Ms. Jarvis and the boys."
Estella, knowing she would see them again, readily waved. "Goodbye, Ms. Jarvis. See you tomorrow, Archie and Benny." Roxanne smiled and walked them to the door. After seeing them off, she returned Archie and Benny to their room.
During the drive home, Estella, in the passenger seat, looked expectantly at her father. "Daddy, do you think Ms. Jarvis will like us?"
Lucian froze. He'd only intended to use the anniversary celebration to draw Roxanne closer, giving little thought to the long term. Estella's question surprised him. Getting Roxanne to like Estella might be easy, but winning her affectionโฆ
He smirked, mocking himself as he recalled incidents from six years prior. She had vanished without a trace then. Winning her heart again wouldn't be simple.
Noticing his hesitation, Estella clenched her fists. "Will Ms. Jarvis start avoiding us again?"
Lucian met his daughter's gaze. "It all depends on what you're capable of," he said solemnly. Roxanne had always been fond of Estella; he knew he was the only obstacle to their closer relationship.
Estella pressed her lips together, raising her fist. "Okay! I'll try my best!"
