After Roxanne finished tending to Estella, Archie and Benny returned downstairs, carrying Estella's gifts. Each boy held a strange-looking stuffed toy. Approaching the little girl, they said, "We bought these with our pocket money. You can have them."
The dolls were simultaneously adorable and hideous, and didn't seem to suit Estella at all. However, this was her first time receiving gifts from peers she liked, and she joyously accepted them, hugging them tighter than her previous doll.
After a while, Estella put down the toys and scribbled a large thank you in her notebook, showing it to Archie and Benny. This was the first time the boys had seen her beam like that. They had previously avoided her because she was their father's child with another woman. But seeing her happy expression, their hearts skipped a beat. They exchanged sheepish glances and scratched their heads.
"She's such a cute half-sister!" one murmured. "I don't want to hate her anymore."
Meanwhile, Roxanne's heart softened as she watched the three children interact. "Why don't you play with Essie for a while?" she suggested to her sons, stroking Estella's head. "I need to call the research institute and let them know I'll be a little late. I just applied ointment to Essie's hand, so be careful."
The boys nodded obediently. Roxanne went upstairs to make the call.
"Shall we play Lego?" the boys asked. Unsure of girls' preferences, they offered their usual toys. Estella, bright-eyed, readily agreed.
I was right to come here today! she thought. Ms. Jarvis treated my wound, and Archie and Benny want to play with me!
Archie and Benny were exceptionally intelligent, so Roxanne bought them adult Lego sets, capable of creating massive models. Their current project was about half finished.
"If you don't know how to do this, you can watch us first," Archie said kindly.
Estella watched solemnly as they connected Lego bricks. Soon, she picked up some pieces and began building. Archie and Benny paused to offer guidance, only to realize she was catching on quickly. She matched their speed and accuracy, leaving them dumbfounded. Their mother had bought them the advanced sets because of their intelligence, but Estella was equally adept.
Is it because we share the same father? they wondered.
Just then, the doorbell rang. The boys exchanged glances, thinking of the same person.
"I'll get the door. Keep Essie company," Archie said, heading toward the entrance.
He opened the door to see a tall man in an elegant suitโhis father.
"Hello," Archie greeted politely, but distantly.
Lucian, looking frosty, had expected Roxanne to answer. He frowned at seeing a child. He must be Roxanne's son, he thought. The boy seemed to dislike him.
"Estella's here with us. Come in," Archie said, giving his father a cool glance before returning inside.
